After all these years I’m through playing in bands no matter the venue.
A lot of them consisted of deadbeats who are using instruments they borrowed and never took back.
They don’t pay their child support and/or have outstanding warrants or the repo guy is trying to locate them, .
I sure got tired of being the designated driver over the last 50 yrs with my only thanks being interrogated by cops while standing in the cold on the side of the road with a bunch of drunks looking out of the widows and laughing.
My only crime being the cops saw us parked at the bar.
Over that period of time I’ve heard about every con there is to try to extort money from me.
I can truly say I have played all over the US, Alaska and Hawaii with the absolute crude of creation.
That was a picnic compared to having to play with these tone deaf local weekend kitchen band retards who’s lives’ seem to revolve around the $20 a week they make playing for the door.
I think the real excitement that kept me going all these years was just when I thought I’d seen everything the band would come up with some disastrous sht that would top it. |

You're beginning to sound just like me a few years back.
I was nearly run off the Forum for my views but they sounded a lot like yours........
In all seriousness, it is a shame. |

Hang in there guys. After all these years I'm finally working with
a promoter that books good venues, pays fairly and everyone cares
about the music.
I don't play a lot of shows, but the ones I do play are fun.
I don't now about y'all, but I live for that few seconds that everything is right. _________________ Jb in Ohio

Oh my, you have put up with a lot. I hired a bass player one time that had to borrow a bass. He said he would buy one. After about 6 months, and he was still borrowing, I fired him. It would not have worked with me being the designated driver either. I did great to have never been arrested for a DUI. I'm sure you will find some decent musicians that are able to qualify as respectable people. _________________ Carter 12 string 4petals 5knees, Mullen G2 3 petals 4 knees

I've been playing in bands since 1959. Some good, some great, some bad. I'm still playing and have considered quitting and start being retired. When it gets to the point I can't do it or can't carry my equipment then I'll stop. |

Well I'm a couple years behind Jack, but when I can't carry me gear anymore I'll have my wife do it, she's 8 years younger than me ! _________________ Emmons L-II , Fender Telecasters, B-Benders , Eastman Mandolin ,

shucks Herb! you didn't have to say that.
If I were surrounded by the great musicians at all times like Herb is I might tend to be sarcastic regarding this topic as well. |

I find that retiring from Music is real easy thing to do. I have done it at least a three times a year since 91 :loL. I have to say unlike Bo (although I have met a few ) I have been blessed to have worked with many great pickers who are still my good friends. I can usually stay retired until I find myself amongst them. Just like the photo above. "Just when I thought I was out, They keep pulling me back in". Thank God for them. |

I'm assuming you're an excellent player who only by circumstance was saddled with unfortunate band situations, but if you're seeking sarcasm, you need look no further than the Original Post. It reads quite harshly. _________________ My rig: Infinity and Telonics.

bwhahahaha!
my experience is so different from the OPs that I don't even know how to relate.
anywhere from many to most of the musicians I play with are my closest comrades. beautiful, wonderful people living interesting lives. kind, generous (and poor!) people.
the better players higher up in the scene seem to be more that way too.
I'm not trying to suggest it's all love and flowers and roses - I am, by nature, bitter and cynical - but I am about to leave Denver, playing my last few gigs with my crew, and I'm alternating between tears and fits of genuine laughter. That's it, right there, for me.
