What the collective opinion of the Marty Robbins Hawaiian albums? I know Jerry Byrd (and I believe another steel player) played on them. Are they worth having? Are they dated schmaltz? I always liked Marty, but mostly the cowboy songs.

There are some good videos on YouTube with Marty, together with Jerry Byrd.

If you like Marty Robbins and Hawaiian music, I think its a no-brainer. Get them! I have "My Isle of Golden Dreams" and The Bear Family comp "Hawaii's Calling Me". This last one is a bit pricy, but it's really the only one I need. Schmaltzy?--perhaps so depending on your taste. But if you like Hawaiian music, then you probably have a fairly high tolerance for schmaltz anyway. I think the music is enjoyable on its own terms....and it's Jerry Byrd!

Isn't that TRUE of all music.........?

The record companies ALWAYS used to put a lousy song on the B Side of the old 78 rpm discs.

Paul the other player was probably James Farmer. I think I still have some 78's & LP's of theirs in storage along with the newer Jerry Byrd versions. Ray "LIGHTS OUT" Montee claims to be JB's #1 fan, but there are still some of us oldsters that will argue the point with him.

I have the CD. It is called "Marty Robbins Hawaii's calling me" It has 28 songs on it. Jerry Byrd's on half of them. It is a permanent part of my collection. Jerry Byrd was a master with the Hawaiian touch. In my opinion it is a must own.

Ray, I think it is true of a lot of compilations, especially those that insist on including the rejected takes of otherwise good numbers. But I have to say I have some albums that are of a high standard throughout. For example: Evening in the Islands, Eddie Pang and Barney Isaacs, and Beached by Ian Ufton, just to name a few.

Thanks for your opinions. I like Hawaiian music, so that's why I asked. And like so many albums, some songs are better then others. Smile

I have two Marty Robbins Hawaiian albums. Both made around 1957.
I highly recommend them both Very Happy

One is titled "Song Of The Islands" with James Farmer playing steel.

The other is "Hawaii's Calling Me" with Jerry Byrd playing steel.

Get them both. It's very interesting to hear the contrast of steel guitar styles between Jerry Byrd and James Farmer and Marty really nails the vocals, falsetto and all.

I don't know the album, but the video of Marty with Jerry on resonator caused me to abandon the Stevens bar on acoustic for the bullet bar. What a liberation! My endless thanks to Basil Henriques who posted the videos to Youtube.

Those great musical numbers with Marty featuring Jerry Byrd on a resonator are from a t.v. show called "The Drifter" that aired around 1965. Unfortunately, I don't think the music was ever released on audio. I did buy the whole series on dvd though.
