What part of the speaker do you point the mic to? Cone? Edge? Somewhere in between?

I have a Sennheiser e609 I'm planning to use for the first time. I know the mic position has an effect on the tone. Would like to hear suggestions for best pedal steel tone.

The general consensus holds that ⅔ of the way out/⅓ of the way in sounds best.
Feel free to experiment, of course

I have an e609, and I place it just to the right or left of the dust cap. Possibly a quarter or third of the way between the dust cap and the edge of the cone as Lane suggests. Never have it pointed at the dust cap.

Off center of the speaker about half way and about 6 inches or so away from the speaker.

I have an On Stage amp stand that you an attach a mic boom arm that comes over the top of the amp to mic it. It folds flat and is really handy. Let me know if you want the model number. I think it is an RS 7500, but not sure. About $30.00 from Guitar Center.

Thanks for all the tips.

The 609 is a flat-faced mic that lays against the grill cloth, hanging by the cable, no stand needed. At least I hope it works that way. I plan to tilt the amp back, the mic should hang in position.

That's how to use the e609. It works great. I learned about that mic from a sound man at a gig I played. Of course it can be stand mounted.

I use a Shure SM-57. I place it between the dust cap and the edge of the cone...slightly more to the end of the cone. I angle it slightly. I have a neat little Mic stand. Some dangle the Mic through the Amp's handle. Most good sound me do it via a boom stand. I always take my little stand.

I generally place the mic as close to the grill as it can go without touching, inline with the edge of the dust cap, i.e. about 2" off the center of the speaker.
