This is terrible news indeed. He was brilliant. I was still hoping to hear him play live one day. Sad

The world will never see another guitarist like Paco de Lucia. I am really saddened by this awful news.

I was lucky enough to see him with John McLaughlin and Al DiMeola on both the 1981 and 1983 tours. It was obvious that they were visiting his world, and his playing ran that band. 66 is a bit too close.... but as they say, Talk's Cheap:

If that don't ring your bell, you're bell's broken.

Holy cow, Bill! That's the finest version of Aranjuez I've heard. Paco brought the gypsy fire that so often seems lacking in recordings by classical players.

For technique + interpretation, it stands with Jim Hall's "Concerto" and Miles' "Sketches of Spain" as great art.

From Wikipedia:
Quote:
Until asked to perform and interpret Joaquín Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez in 1991, de Lucía was not proficient at reading musical notation.[59] Biographer Pohren, however, at the time of writing his biography in 1992, said that he was still not proficient and had found a bizarre way of learning the piece, locking himself away.[60] His performance with the orchestra under Edmon Colomer was highly acclaimed, a sensitive, atmospheric rendition that composer Rodrigo himself praised, describing it as "pretty, exotic, inspired" ... I might add that Paco plays it with a great deal of feeling, far more than is normally heard. And that goes for the orchestra that backs him up.

Back in the mid 70's,when I was on tour w/ Tommy Overstreet,we went to Spain,& I went to a local music store & asked who was the best Flamenco guitarist around. They said,"Paco" I,immediately bought 2 casette tapes of him. I have, since, transferred them to CD. As I recall, one of them is a "live" recording. He was GREAT!! I'll have to dig 'em out & listen to 'em again. Sad

So sad to hear this, one of few musicians who could combine outstanding technical ability seamlessly with real emotion.

A real loss to music Sad
