Here are a couple fun ones I just finished up and thought I'd share, Cub 001 and Cub 002.
I had a request from a player for something pretty basic, compact and above all, light weight. As it happened, I had this design in my head that I'd wanted to build for some time and a chunk of some real nice light weight meranti mahogany. The one with the P90 is his and came in at 3.8 lbs. The other I left just a tad thicker and its the heavyweight at 4.3 lbs.
They are not as fancy as some of what I do, but that was the point in developing the Cub. My goal was for a nice and simpler basic design that still had great playability and tone.

Very sweet! Great colors and I love the fretboard-- that is amazing!
My next project is going to be a bass steel made by YOU in this design. I'm saving starting now.

Thanks all!  I am real tickled with how they came out. Like I mentioned, it was an idea that had been rattling around in my head for a while and its fun to have it finally come forward and turn into something real.
Jon ... The full on integrated fretboard was always part of what I had stuck in my head. It has a cool look to it without adding a lot of extra work. I'm of the school where simple does not mean it has to be boring.
Andy ... I got lucky with how it all came together. Amongst other design elements, in particular I like how the headstock transition ended up working out.
Mike ... A bass sounds like fun! Give me a shout and we can explore the possibilities.
Will ... Thanks, I'm not sure how or why, but in my mind its always been the Cub. Now if we build Mike a bass, will probably have to call it Papa Bear
Steve ... Scale is 22.5" I figured for the prototypes I'd start with the shorter scale.

Beautiful Guitars and I bet they play splendid. Now you have my interest even more a Bass? What a concept. How many strings? I guess a 6 String slide bass would be perfect.
Wow I can' wait to hear the plan. You all are so inspiring, real music and real people its more like the America I like being in and part of.

tom..granted these aren't the full on art masterpieces that some of your other steels are, but i'm really impressed with how nice the simplicity worked out. art nonetheless! very nice and comfortable looking....and they just look like they should sound good. i'm picturing them 50 years down the road with a beautiful aged sound. they don't look cheap at all. i like the p90 best!
what are those tuners called? i think i want some for my dobro. |
