I play a S-12, E9/B6 Universal. The vertical knee-lever lowers the 5th string from B to Bb and is used with both the E9 and B6 tunings. Since the LKR lever is in the way when using the B6 pedals, I added a short little lever to the vertical lever. That little lever can be pushed to the left, when my leg is over the B6 pedals. It makes the vertical lever a LKL lever, too. As you can see, I also shortened the LKR lever, making it easy to move my knee under it and over to the B6 pedals. Once my leg is positioned over the B6 pedals, I can activate the vertical lever by pushing to the left or activate the additional LKR lever that is near the center of the guitar.

Seems as though it could be applied to a D-10, too. |

Thats brilliant Lee! I ordered a vertical knee lever kit from Mike at Mullen a few weeks ago for a SD10 3x4. Havent gotten it yet but I imagine theyre busy with G2 orders. I will be asking you more about this installation when it arrives! |

Looks like two great ideas, Lee. Are the short levers stiff? Maybe not, because if the guitar is the right height, you are mostly pushing against the top of the levers anyway.
I'm a little envious of that two-way vertical lever because I can't use it. I don't have a Bb lever. My LKV raises the 1st and 7th strings to G and G#. |

Steve - That's hand-rubbed blue birdseye by either Formica or Wilsonart!
David - The levers are quite easy to push. That may be because Mullen guitars are just that way. The stubby LKR lever raises string 1 from F# to G#, raises string 2 from D# to E, and lowers string 6 from G# to F#, with an extra rod to tune the G natural split. That vertical lever is very, very easy to push, since it's just lowering the one string.

I had the described double functionality on the LKV or LKR lever on my SuperPro over 30 years ago not by adding a lever but by modifying the existing lever, so it could assume two positions roughly 90 degrees apart. Unfortunately, there wasn't a steel guitar forum then to publish the idea.

Nice idea, Lee. Jeff Newman had things to say about the LKV in his video about the U12. He said to look for a guitar with the pivot for LKV well to the right, so you get a nice long flat "vertical" knee lever to be available for the B6 stuff where it really comes in handy in scale passages or between chords.
My Williams U12 has that, more by luck than judgment on my part of course, but I'm thankful for it. It has transformed certain licks. _________________ Williams 700 series keyless U12,
