| well I have had my encore 3 months now and can't say enough good things about it. I play 2 to3 nights a weeks plus play it ever day and haven't broke a string yet so I put anew set of live stings on it today.I can't say how I used to dread changing strings and this guitar is so easy no pins ,takes half the time. can't thank Doug enough for a great guitar. Yes I agree with you Bob.I'm very,very pleased with my Encore in every way,infact it is everything I was told it would be and better.However, I am being hampered by my wife's late spring clean. She was supposed to rest when she got out of hospital and I have constant orders :decorating,moving items about etc and so it is so good to sit down and listen to this beautiful sounding instrument;it is fantastic!!!!!!! Bob and James,
I am very pleased to hear that you are very pleased with your guitars!
Another couple of batches of the little darlings are getting ready to go out pretty quickly. It's quite a juggling act to keep Stage Ones and Encores in production given the small facility I have but somehow it's happening! Unfortunately I had to turn some perfectly good fishing worms loose in my compost pile yesterday because I don't have time to drown them properly as the good lord intended.....that just isn't right. |

The biggest difference is all pull vs pull-release..

Since I've read so much about them on here, I'll take a stab -- I think differences are:
STAGE ONE
-pull-release
-fixed copedent
-3x4
-no tuneable splits
-cost-effective parts (e.g., L-bracket knee bars)
-low-profile neck
-no aluminum surround around the pickup
-Doesn't have ZumSteel name on front of guitar
-no choice of pickup
ENCORE
-all-pull
-changeable copedent with triple raise and triple lower
-3x5, min - but can be 4x5 (and can add a removeable pad)
-tuneable splits
-professional and fully-adjustable Zum undercarriage with higher quality knee levers
-raised neck
-aluminum surround pocket around the pickup
-has ZumSteel name on front of guitar
-choice of pickup, including a Wallace Truetone
Perhaps the maple quality is higher, too? Obviously, Doug can answer all this for certain.

| my tendency would be to just spend manufacturing time on the encore, eliminate the stage one and drop the encore price as much as possible. |

Good point. I believe, they also had cheaper tuning key-heads, but when the Encore came out, both models got the upgrade. I meant only the newer ones, but it appears the new ones have "by ZumSteel" on them (though that could seem akin to Squier "by Fender" or Orville "by Gibson" if such things bother the buyer). Again, I am no expert - both guitars get rave reviews.

I couldn't agree more with keeping the Stage One as an active choice. I was set to buy one, and then the steal of a steel deal came along that I got (GFI Student and Nashville 112). Someday, I may set my sites on an Encore, althogh I doubt I would ever be able to use the vertical knee lever, because of problems with my knees / legs. I do OK with 3 peds 4 knees.

I do hope to be able to keep the Stage One. Of the guitars I have built, about four hundred or so have gone to people new to the instrument. They need to have a trouble free guitar on which to get started and most did not seem to want to invest in a more expensive guitar.
Even though the Stage One is a bargain, it's still around the thousand dollar mark and that is a good chunk of change for somebody to lay out to try to find out if they will like an instrument. I know I wanted a pedal steel for a long time before I could ever afford one.
I'm looking for a larger building to purchase. We have lots of buildings for rent around here but I'm not much on renting anything. If I'm going to pay for a building I'm going to own it. Stay tuned! |

It’s not embarrassing to be the one that shows up at a jam with a Stage One.
It is embarrassing to be the one who shows up with shiny new “vulgar display of wealth†PSG and gets their doors blown off by someone playing a Stage One.
If you’re worried about the logo, I’ve got the solution for that.

I got my new Encore about 2 weeks ago now and I've been so occupied by it that the time has really flown! I loved my Stage One so I had a lot of faith that the Encore would be a good choice and boy was I right! First thing I like about both steels is the ergonomics of them. I've owned several different steels over the past 8 years and none of them felt as comfortable to play as these. Adjustable knee levers on the Encore allow you to fine tune the fit too. The mechanics are such high quality that as soon as you begin to play you know you have a state of the art modern steel, and I think that has a lot to do with the comfort. I have a Wallace True Tone pick up on the Encore and the tone is outstanding. I am going to keep my Stage One too because I think both steels are fantastic.
