Here is a couple of pics of my friends Kevin Shaw's
bass/steel guitar amp head. In his own words "Just had to take a picture of this before it went into the case. The latest revision of the Shaw Bass and Steel guitar head. 150 watts, 4 KT88's, a pair of 6SL7 octal preamp tubes, and the best transformers Mercury can supply. A shame it has to go in a case"

"Here is the Shaw steel guitar rig I have been working on with the help of Jeff Surratt at Show Pro Steel Guitars. The head is our 150 watt bass guitar platform with some modifications in the tone circuit to add the top end sparkle that steel players demand. Octal preamp tubes, tone stack with 6 position mid voicing, lots of clean headroom, and massive Mercury Magnetics iron, a must for a good steel amp. The speaker cab is a custom built 1 x 15 sealed back with 4- 2" tuned ports at each corner, loaded with an Eminence 300 watt EPS-15 Neo purpose built steel guitar speaker with metal dust cap. Speaker cab only weighs 33 lbs. Any local Nashville steel players that want to give it a test drive, call me at the shop"

Kevin is from my home town and the last time he was in he brought me one of the heads to try. Needless to say I wouldn't let him take it back. I'm really loving it!
Just wanted to pass this along to all my forum bros as another all tube option.

Lots iron and glass, simple knob array and a couple switches. This looks killer. I'd definitely like to hear it.

I'm used to seeing the transformers orthogonal to each other... no choke? Looks like one cap might cook, although that's a secret of ampery... electrolytic ESR goes way down with temperature going up.

There is a Youtube of Jeff playing through the head before Kevin made some changes. I spoke to Jeff and he is using an RV-3 going into the front of the amp. The head will go down to a 2 ohm load and has an effects loop. The six position mid contour is effected by where you set the bass and treble and the treble knob has a pull bright switch. I'm not an electronics expert or amp builder but I know what I like as far as what I'm hearing. The head weights 42 lbs so its not too heavy. Any technical question should be directed to Kevin through his website shawaudio.com . Thanks Dale

To answer Stephen's question according to Kevin there is a rather large choke mounted underneath the chassis. Greg thanks for the link to head on the website but they do not have Jeff's youtube on the website. You have go to Youtube and type in Shaw Audio .

Looks nice. I have never seen an example of this amp but I have heard some great sounding Shaw guitar amps.

Guys were inquiring about me building a higher wattage version of my 5b6 cage amp and then I ran across this Shaw amp.

I emailed Kevin Shaw and asked if this bass amp worked well with steel guitar because I thought it should and Kevin said yes in fact he was working local players to help promote the idea.

Looks like a perfect platform to me at a great price.

I got to play through a slightly updated version of this amp today. Nice!

Between Brad's Sarno pre-amps, Tim's Milkman combos and heads, and amps like the Shaw, maybe we're heading back towards a better time for contemporary tube steel amps.

Seems like there is a slowly growing number of options for tubeheads to indulge in whatever their sonic taste might be.

And please don't forget Dan Lurie's awesome FYD amps and preamps. I love my Town and Country Steel amp.

Hand wired excellence.
