Here`s a thought there are the normal 6 string Dobro also 7 string dobro so why not a 12 string dobro?

I would imagine it would give the player quite a bit more useful variations in the tuning.

12's have been made.

They just do not sound very good. Too much pressure on the cone. The massive neck on a standard body is also darn awkward.

edit: This will probably get moved to the no pedal forum.

Not if you hurry up and stick some pedals on it... Wink

Oh, but it will likely get closed by the Anti-Vaguery Thread Title Police...

Aside from what Howard mentioned, it would also make slants and string pulls far more difficult. And, there is of course the main issue...that the instrument (as it is) is not a limiting factor as much as is the skill of the player. Wink

I played someone's 10 string reso, and it was so uncomfortable. I think 8 would be the most I could handle.

As I said it was IT WAS JUST A THOUGHT. My MSA Super slide I used to have had 12 strings and I had no problems pulling or slants ,and I used a graphic eq to get the dobro sound and it sounded great.

That is why I just wondered if a 12 string Dobro would be ok ,I guess some would love it and others would not.

Yep..Understood.

Just pointing out that there are technical issues that make a twelve string "impractical" for a dobro style guitar. Unlike the MSA, where you can slap a wider pickup on the guitar the dobro's cone can only take so much pressure before it stops doing its job. Whoa!

Mike A found, like Howard pointed out, that 10 loaded up the cone and made it markedly less responsive. ISTR he converted to an 8. Don't recall whether he left the palm pedals (See, B0b, relevance) on it.
