Seen this posted a bunch of times. It never gets old and every time someone re-posts it, some new people check it out. I understand that Leon was also a pro level fast pitch pitcher and really great on the tenor banjo. So humble and quick to recognize his peers. Seen him with ET a bunch of times and the whole band was tight. Great dynamics and nobody playing over top of anyone else. You could hear all the nuances of each instrument.Band leaders were smart back then to feature and announce the names of the pickers behind them during the lead parts. Making the backup band famous meant that the crowd feel that they were seeing more than one star on stage. It also made the headliner more famous for having a famous band!

| Great post ! Leon was always one of my fav pickers...did he ever record a solo album like Billy Byrd did ? I know he and Buddy did alot of recording together of instrumentals, but a Leon Rhodes cd of instrumentals would be great...any exist ? |

While waiting for the Ray Price Show to arrive at the Division Street Corral following their downtown public auditorium stage show, our band was playing our hearts out to the gathering crowd.
As soon as they walked in thro' the main entrance way, our band stopped and vacated the small stage.
Later during the first break I sensed a stirring in the crowd then heard someone holler out 'HEY, he's over here!"
It was Leon Rhodes trying to get the attention of the chubby younger piano player and the two red headed fiddle players, BIG Red and Little Red Herron.
Leon invited me to accompany the band on the remainder of their lengthy tour ultimately ending up in Nashville. It seems their steel player had to return to Nashville due to a sickness in his family.
Leon and I waited for about a half hour while Ray and his manager were enjoying a hot dog and soda. As it turned out, they left without ever talking to me.
I don't think Price was even aware of 'our' presence.
At that time, I had no real idea WHO Leon Rhodes was.
Just think: It might've been me instead of Buddy Charleton.........then again, they might have dropped me and my quad Bigsby just outside Mullen, Montana.
Oh well, just another 'missed opportunity'. |

Rhodes doing road dates with Price ? !
Not surprising that Leon could not 'recall'
as he has, in the past, stated that he quit
Tubb in 1966 explicitly to get off the road
to begin accepting the recording work in
town that he had been increasingly in
demand for.
Through the years there's never been any
obvious documentation of Rhodes working
on Prices band.
