I have a Zum U-12 and have been using a .070W on string 12. I've been doing this only because it was the string gauge that Bruce used to sell in his sets and recommended. All the other string gauges are identical to a standard U-12 set.
Any opinions or reasons why I should or shouldn't continue using this gauge?
It's a little inconvenient because I have to order custom sets. |

I would keep it as it won't be as floppy as the .068 and it will sound better as well. Other players may know better..

That's part of why I haven't switched to a .068w yet.
I figure if Bruce designed the guitar for a .070w then that's what should be used but what do I know.
Just wanted some more opinions. |

I used to specify 0.070 in my sets which made them custom and pricey.
For the number of times I actually pluck that low B I decided to go with whatever is offered in a Universal "Jeff Neuman gauges" set which is 0.068. |

So do you notice much difference in the tension? _________________ MSA 12 String E9th/B6th Universal.

I used to use 70s, but decided to switch to 68s because of the cost difference. I noticed tension change, but I don't think it made much difference in sound, or tone, quality....at least none that mattered. I got used to the tension difference real quick. No issues.
P.S. The string brand might play a more important role than the gauge difference. I usually have Bobbe's Cobra Coils on my U12s. _________________ Best regards,

Frenchy's, Steel Guitar Nashville, and other vendors offer sets with a 68. If you shop around some, I'm sure you will find others that use 68 as standard 12th string.
Billy Cooper's has the SIT sets which have a 68.
Discount String Warehouse likely offers sets like this too.
Most vendors will sub you out a 68 for a 70. I bet Bruce would too if you asked him. Same with b0b here, most likely.
Far as the gauge is concerned, I think you should use whatever you like the sound and feel of. Best to always use the same gauges and alloy to eliminate a lot of re-tuning when replacing them.
I wouldn't think cost of the sets would vary due to that small difference in gauges unless you're buying them as singles. |

B0b used to sell me Jagwire sets with the .070w substituted at no cost. LSS also list the custom gauge as the same price. I don't know what B0b's policy is now.
I'll stick with the .070w. I just have to ask for it. |
