I have to refinish these two beauties, I know I should probably dismantle everything before I start, can anyone give me any help on how this is done correctly? I can buy with one hand and sand with the other, but my wife says she'll tie up the one that buys until things get down around here. What should I use(materials) and how should I do it??? Thanks you guys are great out there(please dont sell me anything else for awhile.

Hi Mike: Thanks for the info! The D8 is a dark Brown with no dings and some scratches. The Stringmaster is about the same color, I already have a blonde one so this one shouldnt be that much trouble.Should I just "eyeball" the color match (brown) or is there a specific stain or color that you use?
I havent updated this thing lately Im in Fresno now. Thanks again!

Never seen a D-10 Stringmaster either. My guess is Chuck has a D-8 Stringmaster and a D-10 Fender pedal Steel of some type. Does the D-10 have pedals Chuckie?

I'm with Mike on this one - leave the original finish alone!

I'll third the motion- as far as I'm concerned, the only reason to EVER destroy an original finish, is if somebody has already done so. If the guitars are stock, leave the finish alone and revel in the character and the hard-earned dings, checks and knocks! I have seen so many used steels that would be ever so wonderful (and valuable) if they had not been refinished.

Even seen Bobby Koeffer's 3x8 fender Custom? The front has the finish completely worn down to the bare wood. This is from decades of resting his fingers while he plays the top neck (with his thumb!). If I were to ever own his steel someday, I would treasure that worn-out finish way more than the high gloss of any new guitar!

end of rant...
