Topic: Bad Distortion at loud volume? |

| My Evans FET 500 LV sounds perfect at the lower volume when I practice at home, but on the bandstand, I can't crank it up enough without getting a really bad distortion. It is not the speaker. I connected my good speaker in my 112 and the distortion is still there. Not the speaker. I have tried different cords, but no difference. I have tried it without the volume pedal, no difference, still get distortion when the volume is cranked up. Any ideas? |

What have you got the two volumes set at?

Try turning the Master Vol (output) all the way up,
and the Input Vol at a lower level. It sounds like
it's being over driven. Bet that will help a lot.

| I am very aware of not getting the pre-gain set louder than the main output, so that is not the problem. I played with different settings between the two but it made no difference. I just forgot to mention that in my original post. I guess it needs to be looked at by a tech. Thanks for the input just the same. |

Hey George, I have a Peavy bass amp that is doing the same thing (less than 100 hours on it). Took it to the tech and he disassembled it and couldn't find anything, after he assembled it the problem was gone for a couple weeks. Now it is doing the same thing again. Lower volumes are no problem, from about 4 on the dial and up are distorted. I would like to know what you find.  |

Re-tense your Molex connectors and spray lightly with Pro-Gold, then re-insert. It's those darn cheeseball connectors, I'll bet.

It wouldn't hurt to pull out the chassis and make sure
that all the IC chips are in all the way, and any plugs
can be unpluged and reinserted again. They can come
loose in time and loose good contact.

I certainly can see that if there was something loose, then the higher volume would "shake" it and make the distortion. As soon as I get a chance, I will pull out the chasis and take a tour and see if I can spot anything.
