Make plans to attend the tenth anniversary celebration of the Southwestern Steel Guitar Association’s 2013 Annual Show & Convention, January 17, 18, & 19, Sheraton Crescent Hotel, Phoenix. It’s going to be an extravaganza event to be sure!

Professor Twang (aka John McClung) and Denny Beaver will present an E9 PSG Beginner/Intermediate course of instruction on Thursday, January 17th, 9:00 AM until 1:00 PM.

Denny will start the seminar with the “beginner’s” segment where he’ll present material that is guaranteed to pique your interest on your journey to becoming an accomplished steel guitarist.

John’s topic of instruction will be, ”Work Up Songs Like a Pro”, which will definitely enlighten players of any skill level.

This seminar will be held in the Crestview Room (outbuilding immediately across the lobby walkway), which can easily accommodate 50 students with their guitars and amps (please bring a headphone amp, or an amp with headphone output and a pair of headphones. Earbuds are recommended so you can hear yourself and the instructors simultaneously).

Cost for this exciting seminar is just $35, which includes a session booklet. All fees from this seminar go back to SWSGA to produce even bigger and better shows in the future. See you at the seminar AND the show!!

TTT...

In my part of the seminar, I'll show you the systematic way pro players approach:

understanding chords and melody in a song; and how to expand all that into a dynamic arrangement.

If you're learning mostly from tablature, but wondering how to "decode" songs for yourself, this seminar will show you how it's done, step-by-step.

You won't need to bring your pedal steel, just big ears to listen and learn!

Way to go, guys---this is what's been missing far too long. One of the best ways to promote steel guitar is to offer more "start up" type of help for prospective newcomers to the instrument. Our Ozark Steel Guitar Association in Branson has started a monthly get together for this group, a brain child of Vice President, Charlie Steichen, and is a great program. It's fine to attend and hear the accomplished players but at some point this type of help has been missing too long !-- Smile

I wanted to say a thanks to the 14-15 players who attended our seminar, Denny Beaver (my co-teacher) and I hope you learned some new things and new ways to approach learning on your own.

I try to get my students largely self-sufficient so they can understand what's going on chord-wise when listening to songs, and then have some good ideas on where to start on E9 when figuring out how to play songs. There's definitely a time and place for tablature learning, but your best investment of time is training your mind and ears to HEAR what's going on in music.

Attendees asked a lot of good questions!

We'll do something similar again in 2014.
