I was researching purchasing a Peterson StroboFlip tuner today and I found they were discontinued by Peterson. What do other players recommend? I use a Peterson 400 Strobe Tuner from the 70's now - it's great but cumbersome. I know the Stroboflip had the presets so it was quick to use for a sweetened steel tuning. I'd appreciate others input.

I was disappointed that the 'flip was discontinued, too. I have one that works perfectly, and I dread the day it dies. Occasionally, they do show up for sale used.

Rumor has it that Peterson is coming out with a new Stroboflip later this year?

An alternative, if you need a strobe tuner now, is the Sonic Research ST122A tuner. It has the Newman tunings (default) and the Emmons company tunings for pedal steel.

For whatever reason, I could never use the pre-programmed Newman settings in the Strobe-O-Flip (they didn't sound right and I had problems tuning my Franklin) and had resorted to my own modified Newman settings. With the ST122A, I'm using the Newman settings and its working out without problems.

The ST122A is metal (not plastic) made in the USA, and comes with a padded carrying case.

See this old forum thread on the ST122A

I agree, Jack, the Newman presets in the Strobo flip were close, but only close. I have found that each guitar is different, needing to be in tune with its self. I entered my own presets for my Fingertip, and that's the default I see when I turn on my tuner.

Steve, If you run an iPhone, Peterson has some tuner apps for it.
If you run an Android phone, Cleartune at 3 dollars is a good tuner, if you get an adapter cable from Amazon (Peterson sells 1 for 13 dollars). Cleartune does not come with steel guitar presets loaded, but programming your own is very easy. It took me all of 15 minutes to Program all 3 necks: E9; C6 and Bb6

I ran across a bad Peterson Strobostomp in a music store last week. It would turn on for only a second or two and then go blank. So, what the heck, I took it home and emailed Peterson with the pedal's symptoms. They emailed me back within minutes and attached a set of instructions for how to remove a single cap on the circuit board. I did that and the tuner now works perfectly. Great customer service.

Anyway, I mentioned in my email to them that I was sorry their StroboFlip was discontinued. The service rep replied that they are coming out with a new tuner model soon.

I had been using Peterson's Strobosoft on my laptop, which works well -- has the Newman tunings in it. I was getting tired of lugging the laptop and waiting for it to boot.

I thought I'd heard that the Peterson Flip replacement was coming out in October, so I waited...now they are saying "in time for the holidays" so I couldn't wait any more and ordered the ST-122A.

It came yesterday and I am thrilled with it. Solid as a rock and very easy to read the display and work with. Expensive but worth it. Won't ever need another tuner!

It's not obvious where to find it....but if you go to

https://www.turbo-tuner.com/secure/secureorderform_t122a.html

You can place your order there. They also take phone orders.

Thanks, the last time I looked at their web page, they did not list the "A" version.

They still don't! I don't know why, except maybe the 122A is selling so well they don't have to advertise it.
