What a Master of the riff, his picking was as tasteful and Beautiful to fit the music being played, he was a nice addition to the stage and hope he returns soon....I enjoyed hearing him play with several artists...I was glad he was able to repair his guitar after it was damaged...too bad we dont have a Luthier on site for these kinds of things...

Leon was an awesome addition to the bandstand, he definetly made Dino smile a few times as they traded licks and played off each other, it was a pleasure to listen to.

Leon has been my favorite guitarist for many years, and after this past show, he still ranks at the top.
Friday morning while singing with Neil Flanz, it was my pleasure to turn and ask Leon to take a ride. What more could a singer ask for? How about two great guitarist, Dino Strunk and Leon Rhodes together.
WOW......

Back in the mid-1960's, the Division Street Corral here in Portland was a focus point for many of the BIG TIME Nashville Stars passing thro' the area.

Our house band frequently backed-up the Star vocalists who often did have their own band.

On this one occasion, we were holding down the fort for the Ray Price contingent that had played an earlier show at our downtown city auditorium. As soon as the first band members appeared in the door, Tommy Kizziah, our leader, shouted out for 'us' to pack up and clear the stage for Ray Price's band.

I ultimately was off in a darkened corner of the huge hall conversing with some of my regular weekly friends when I noticed a rustling in the crowd. Next thing I heard was someone shouting out..."Hey guys, he's over here!"

It was none other than LEON RHODES who inquired if I was the guy playing the BIGSBY when they first entered the hall. He ultimately invited me to go meet Ray and his road manager in the hope I'd go with the band on the rest of their northwest tour and ultimately back to Nashville as their steel player had to return to Nashville because of a sick relative.

So, I was discovered by this wonderful guy, this exceptionally fine musician......and until then, I'd never really heard of Leon Rhodes. That of course was prior to YOU TUBE and the internet. I've never forgotten that night.

Funny thing tho'. I called Leon a couple of years ago and guess what. HE couldn't remember that event.
Can you imagine?

Rhodes doing road dates with Price?!
That's a revelation, since Rhodes has
stated that he quit Tubb in 1966 explicitly
to get off the road and begin accepting the
recording work in town that he had been in
demand for.
In all these years there's never been any obvious
documentation of Rhodes being a 'Cherokee Cowboy'.
