I want to try the "Nashville" tuning on an acoustic guitar. I believe thats accomplished by stringing the 3rd and 4th strings an octave higher, and leaving the 1st, 2nd, 5th, and 6th at standard pitch. What gauge strings should the alternate strings be? I'm pretty sure this isnt posted in the correct place. Thanks _________________ Clinesmith consoles D-8/6 5 pedal, D-8 3 pedal & A25 Frypan, Pettingill Teardrop, & P8 Deluxe. |

I always did it by changing all but the 1st and 2nd strings. _________________ Brian |

It takes a 12 string set, of course here strings 1 and 2 are identical. _________________ Fender Kingman, Sierra Crown D-10, Evans Amplifier, Soup Cube. |

I've played with the tuning a bit. Basically you're changing all 4 wound strings to unwound, and back when I first tried it some years ago an easy way to get string sets was to use the unwound octave strings from a 12 string set to get a 6 string set for the high tuning, which is what Joachim is describing. Now some companies are selling Nashville tuning sets. Both Martin and D'Addario market them.
I use the tuning on a Baby Taylor, which doesn't have much low end anyway. I would think on some guitars there might be some set up issues with such a big change in string dimension and tension in replacing the thick wound strings with much thinner unwounds, but I found the baby Taylor worked fine without any changes but the strings. . |

I have several .11's from my pedal steels. I simply removed 3 and 4 and strung up a pair of those in their place, just as an experiment. Sound pretty awesome I think. I doubt if I'll leave it that way, but it makes for a nice change. Thanks for all the advice. _________________ Clinesmith consoles D-8/6 5 pedal, D-8 3 pedal & A25 Frypan, Pettingill Teardrop, & P8 Deluxe. |
