Anyone familiar with Jack Penewell? He recorded for Autograph records in 1924, as well as for Paramount, playing a "twin-six" acoustic Spanish neck guitar.
More significantly (to me), he is also listed
on the "Hawaiian Guitar on the Air" page of the February 1934 issue of "The Hawaiian Guitarist" magazine as playing on WGBI Scranton, PA and WBRE Wilkesbarre, PA.
He is not listed in the Steel Guitar Discography.
Is anyone familiar with Jack Penewell, particularly his Hawaiian steel guitar work? |

There's a picture of him in this PDF file. According to this discography, Mr. Pennewell recorded two songs on Hawaiian guitar for the Paramount 20000 series, "Hen House Blues" and "Memphis Blues". I am not familiar with his work, but I would bet there are 78 rpm record collectors out there who are.

| I have some of Jack Penewell's 78s and also a little information on him.He was a vaudeville artist from Madison,Wisconsin ...born 1897 died 1973. Music Studio News carried a small feature on him ,with photo ,in their Jan/Feb 1952 issue .If you want a copy of the article ,Bob ,email me and I'll send you one .I can also put you in touch with Penewell's nephew if you wish |

Also, I just spoke with Dirk Vogel who said that a recording by Penewell was among the 6,000 Hawaiian steel guitar recordings he donated to the University of Hawaii.

Here's a newspaper photo from the Davenport Democrat and Leader, March 23, 1925 showing Jack Penewell with his "Twin Six" guitar.
I assume one of the necks was in standard tuning. I wonder what the other neck was tuned to. Does anyone know if it was common in 1925 for people use alternate tunings for Spanish guitar?

Hi Michael,
The 1952 Music Studio News article shows Penewell playing a six string lap but the photo caption states:
...Inventor of the twelve string Hawaiian guitar Twenty-four string Hawaiian guitar
"ORGAN TONE VOLUME CONTROL" Writer of that beautiful song "She's my Sweetheart Lei Lani from Wai-ki-ki"
Photo(s) of Penewell playing a multineck lap would be news to the rest of us.

Jack Penewell, Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. When I saw that name, I said to my self, YES I knew a Jack Penewell, Could this be the same Jack Penewell, after all a lot of years have passed since I knew a Jack penewell. I'm 79 now and I was 13 at the time with one year of Hawian Guitar lessons under my belt, from the Wisconsin School of Music. up on Gorham street in Madison. It was at the Eagles club in Madison, where i first met Jack Penewell he was playing on a National New Yorker. I'll try to cut this short but I bought that National New Yorker from him for $100.00, it was balck and white that was in 1946. One of the neet things that Mr Penewell had on his Lap steel was a knob on the volum control that had an extenwion on it so that you could put your pinky finger in so you could control the volumn when you were playing. He said that he designed that little item.
Bob you talk about a memory from the past, I could not believe my eyes what I saw this listing.
