Singer/Songwriter Terry Reid was a well know "Opening Act" in the 1960's -- 1969 Reid then left England and settled in California. In 1970, Terry Reid returned briefly to England to perform at the Isle of Wight Festival, supported by David Lindley, Reid was filmed performing in Glastonbury Fayre, the 1971 film by David Puttnam.
This Thread is Focused on Lindley's Lead Steel Playing during the Video Please keep it on the Steel Playing aspect.
Brief history on Terry Reid from Wikipedia:
Yardbirds guitarist Jimmy Page became interested in Reid's work, and when The Yardbirds disbanded, Page wanted Reid to fill the vocalist spot for his proposed new group, the New Yardbirds, which was to become Led Zeppelin. Reid had already committed to go on the road with Cream (as an opening act on the 1968 US Tour). So he suggested to Page that he consider a young Birmingham based singer, Robert Plant, instead, having previously seen Plant's Band of Joy as a support act at one of his concerts. Reid later was offered a position as a member of Deep Purple when they decided to replace singer Rod Evans; Ian Gillan was given the position instead.
In 1969, Reid supported various British tours, notably Jethro Tull and Fleetwood Mac. Reid toured the United States again when he opened for The Rolling Stones on their 1969 American Tour. _________________ GeorgeBoards S8 Non Pedal Steel Guitar Instruments

Well, Lindley's playing is just as always here. For me, anyway. Love the guy.
Having said that there are TONS of other aspects about this video that I would love to discuss but since we're restricted I'll leave it at that. _________________ Brian |

It's been discussed plenty previously, Brian. Dig up one of those threads to expound upon and you won't run afoul of the thread police. |

It's Lindley, what else can you say? Always the right note at the right time, and awesome tone. Thanks for the link, George. |
+1 .. love Davids music and its fun to see him from the long ago in a time far away. Yesterday I was listening to his fairly recent acoustic album with Jackson Brown and was thinking of how his career has progressed. _________________ Some misc pics of my hand crafted steels

The name of the song is "Dean". The studio version is on the album "The River" http://www.thebeesknees.com/?p=177 by Terry Reid, (it has seven selections and David Lindley is on four of them). I had an album by a girl singer who's name I can't recall, from the same time where they both played on. _________________ Fender Kingman, Sierra Crown D-10, Evans Amplifier, Soup Cube.

What steel is young David playing? He's the only lap steel player on the rock scene in the early 70's that I know of. The hippie country acts brought in pedal steel, but that's different. David Lindley is an original. |

That's a National Dynamic. I was wondering if it's the same one he has now. Being the gear hoarder he's always been, I don't imagine that he cycles through equipment much. |

"Mr. Dave".....he's a very innovative player with great ideas.....electric and acoustic......very entertaining and personable on stage as I saw him in a small venue several years ago......he also does an amazing Jack Nicholson imitation...... |

Another from then (and maybe earlier) would be George Cummings of Dr Hook And The Medicine Show. He had a background in country music and often played a lap steel (but usually on legs or a stand):

A big part of the sound and what caught my attention with the band. That and they were scamps. |

This song is from Terry Reid's album, "River". David Lindley's playing is superb. If anything I prefer the studio version because it is much more restrained and subtle.
Terry Reid is a great singer too and was originally lined up as the lead singer for Led Zeppelin. I was lucky to see him live as support to Jethro Tull in Belfast, before this album. What a voice. He's still touring in the UK, enjoying something of a renaissance. |
