Thanks Jason, has anyone replaced the stock cone with one of those that Jason suggested and if so tell me about it. |

Yes. They are all good cones. If you can tell the difference you have better ears than I do! |

I have experience with stamped cones, Quarterman cones and the Scheerhorn cone.
FWIW, although changing the cone in your dobro can/will make a difference, the overall setup is equally important and makes a huge difference in the volume, tone and responsiveness of the guitar. A good setup "loads the cone" to operate at its maximum efficiency
Bridge material (ebony capped maple saddle is a denser and more consistent sounding than maple saddle)
Bridge and nut set high to provide maximum string tension (creates maximum efficiency in transferring string vibrations to the cone)
Accurate string slots
Cone seated correctly in relaxed state on the ledge inside the guitar
Spider lays even on the ledge of the guitar
That said, my experience has been that the Quarterman cone was a big improvement over a stamped cone (stock cones used in OMI Dobros) and the Scheerhorn cone was an improvement over the Quarterman cone. The Scheerhorn cone has better lows and mid tones. It took a little getting used to when I first made the switch, but it really sounds great. I've heard good things about the Beard cone but I don't have any experience with them and don't know if anyone has done the A/B to offer a fair assessment.
Hope this helps! |

What Bob A. said! I put a Quarterman in a cheap Johnson reso and added maple-ebony saddle and bone nut. This didn't turn the guitar into a Dobro, but it was an improvement. _________________ No-name lap steel and Beard Gold Tone reso in E6 and E7 |
