Topic: What are A/B-list PSG players, playing these days? |

Hello all,
I guess many of us wonder what guitar the busy players are playing. You know, the players that their phone never stops ringing with work offers at recording sessions and playing on big stages!
I often think that maybe the A-list guys have a favorite PSG for sessions and another for the road. What secrets do y'all know?

A Jackson is played by Tim Sergent with Dierks Bentley, Wayne Addleman is playin' his ShowPro with Trace Adkins, Denny Hemingson plays his Emmons with Tim McGraw, Steve Hinson plays his ShowPro with Randy Travis, Justin Schipper plays his ShowPro with Josh Turner, Randle Currie plays his Franklin onstage and in the studio with Brad Paisley, Mike Daly plays his Emmons with Hank Jr, Jim Bob Gairrett plays his Mullen with Kenny Chesney, Mike Daily plays a Zum with George Strait. Chad Jeffers plays a Mullen with Carrie Underwood, although his first steel was a Marrs, Robbie Flint still plays his Derby with Alan Jackson.

Not privy to any secrets, but I've seen almost all of the guys mentioned, except maybe for Paul Franklin, play several brands of guitars at different times.

There ain't no best guitar.I asked that same thing when I first got to this forum.Modern steels are un matched.

Of course, I am personally partial to Mullen but I have played others years ago, such as: Emmons, Sho-Bud, MSA and Sierra. For what it's worth, Jody Sanders who is one of the MCs at the Dallas show, posted a list on the Forum of the steels that were actually played on the main stage at the show this past March and there were 11 Mullens, Emmons was 2nd with 6, Rittenberry had 4, Zum had 3 and everything else was either 1 or 2. This is no reflection against any brand but I thought it was interesting. I'm sure there will be a similar list made at St. Louis this year too.

I believe Mike Johnson uses an EMMONS for live stuff and a FRANKLIN for recording . Don't know about the SHO PRO ..... have seen him playing one , but don't know if it's a regular thing .

| Herby, if you don't mind me asking, what is it that makes you prefer the Mullen? Tone, Mechanics, etc.? I've never played one so I have no first hand knowledge. |

Harry, This is of course, my personal opinion but to me on any steel guitar tone is the most important thing and with the Mullen HWP G2 model and also the earlier HWP model, I love the tone and sustain, but the mechanics, staying in tune, very little string breakage and pedal action are all excellent features that are the icing on the cake. Again, this is no reflection on any other guitar out there, but for me, the Mullen has what I am looking for.

Of the steels i have ever owned, the Zum without doubt was my favorite! I think Zum is now very selective as to who he sells Zum's to. When I have talked to Bruce (I am correct, it is Bruce as it's been 2 years or so?), he does not seem anxious to sell a Zum to everyone. Now, that's just my opinion as he did not say that. I'm a gigger on the low end of the food chain. It was 7 years back when I did purchase a new Zum, as I was lucky and caught a new steel being made for a retailer (I think it was Steel City or Music City or . . . in Mississippi, so I got it made as I wanted. It was a dump thing for me to sell that Zum, but I was not playing at the time due to a car accident. Zum is a very fine PSG, no doubt!
Anyways, here I am looking into another steel and this should do.

Down here in Texas most of the A- list players are playing Emmons, with a few Sho-buds popping up. Jim Loessberg plays a PP, Randy Reihardt plays a PP, Rick Price plays a PP, or 3. Dave Biller plays a PP, Dicky Overby plays a PP and an LDG, Kenny Grohman plays a PP, Herb Steiner plays a PP... but, Tommy Detamore plays a Carter, Junior Knight i think is playing an MSA these days, along with Johnny Cox, and Roger Edgington is playing a Zum, Gary Carpenter a Rains... so Emmons arent the only guitars you see...

for what its worth, I've owned 4 steels, and my current one, A Mullen, is by far my favorite. The other brands is of no importance. Larry
