Interesting. I'd never heard that before, but it kind of reminds me of this tune I played on a couple of years ago:

My buddy who produced the track just recorded about 5 minutes worth of me playing over the beat, and then sampled a few choice licks. Hip hop's not really my bag, but it's cool to hear my playing in a different context. My Sho-Bud and I also got a little cameo in the video at about 3:50. |

I did some recording for a hip hop guy named Rench that came out pretty nice a while back.
I didn't find the steel to be masked at all personally. Those tracks sound exactly just like a pedal steel only in a different context. In my experience getting hired by hip hop/ rock/experimental music guys is more often than not they want a straight pedalsteel sound. The more cliche the better in some cases.
An example of a great masked steel sound would be Pete Drake playing the organ parts on "Tell me that it isn't true" from Dylan's Nashville Skyline.
