Early this a.m. driving home, I heard this old tune from the '50's. It was Honky Tonkin' Rhythm by Bobby Sisco. Sort of a swingy, rockabilly sound with a lot of steel guitar whistles and slides that reminded my a lot of Speedy West's style.
Does anybody know if it was in fact Speedy or who it was if not him? |

Yeah, that is a good tune--recorded not far from you (Hammond, Indiana) in early 1956.
It isn't Speedy. The only picture of Sisco's band I have seen is from a later period and shows a pedal steel with no visible player.
Sisco's material has been reissued many times and it may be that the steel player has been identified. I just can't recall.
Jussi Huhtakangas may know--he has been known to play some of Sisco's material and may be able to dig out the reissues more easily than I can. |

Thanks for your reply Mitch. I'm pretty sure the steel was a fixed tuning of some type v. pedals....sure sounded like it.
The whistles and screams were very reminiscent of Speedy's style.....I'm interested to learn who it was just out of curiosity.
I don't recall ever hearing or hearing of this artist before, but I really liked the style and sound of what I heard.
Thanks again. |

If that's not Speedy West, it's somebody who wore out a bunch of Speedy West records.... |
