Wow, 2002 Zum 9 knees and pedals and spotless like it's been in a clean room at Intel for the last 8 years. This is pedal steel porn. seriously, I haven't even played it yet, just wanted to show you all. It should play itself. I just don't feel worthy to even strum it. YEOWZAAAAAAAAA. I don't know if I will even keep it, way over my head. I may have Cindy sleep on the couch tonight so the Zum can sleep with me. Now I need to wipe my prints off of it.

That's what is commonly called "loaded for Bear and lookin' fer trouble!" _________________ The steel guitar is a hard mistress. She will obsess you, bemuse and bewitch you. She will dash your hopes on what seems to be whim, only to tease you into renewing the relationship once more so she can do it to you all over again...and yet, if you somehow manage to touch her in that certain magic way, she will yield up a sound which has so much soul, raw emotion and heartfelt depth to it that she will pierce you to the very core of your being. |

Well now at least I know what all the hype has been about. the pedal action is incredibly smooth. when I first plugged it in I had no sound and it wasn't the pedal, then it came in and out, pulled the plug in and out a couple times and haven't had a problem since, I think it was hibernating. OH , what are the colored tuners for? |

the red one on E9 string 9 tunes the half stop for string 2 half tone lower
the red one on C6 ? - perhaps the same type of half stop ? otherwise it's just a tuner for whatever that lower is supposed to do
blue ones on E9 : strings 5 & 10 vertical lever split - string 6 looks like it tunes the half tone raise (pedal B)
leave the black ones alone David since they are usually set
i believe they're compensators |

Dave,
I understand your confusion about the colored tuners. If you find guitar to be unplayable, call me at my alternate number, 1-GET-$FRM-ERIC |

why would there be any split tuning on a nylon tuner when there are changer screws fo that?
how much does a closet find cost these days? |

What a beauty! A question for Crowbear.. If the black nylons are the compensators, what are the adjusters on the cross bar underneath?
I have only played one Zum and then only on a bands break, but it felt like butter, |

I believe the cap screws are for the full lowers on the split tuning and the red tuners are for the half lower
e.g. 5th string full lower by cap screw- knee lever engaged
5th string raise, white tuner- pedal engaged
5th string split, red tuner- pedal+ knee lever engaged |

David,
I'd sure hope before you play her, that you at least, pour some light machine oil, down through the Changers, in order that you don't completely destroy the fingers and axles.
If she's sat long enough that you had to work with the output jack, enough to get sound to go through, you can also bet, that the lube that's in the changers, has dried up, and turned to crust.
If it was mine, I'd pull the Changers and clean them up the right way, and give her a whole fresh lubing, before playing her.
Just thought I'd pass that along to you. She looks to be too good, to simply be destroyed from being played dry.
A real nice catch............... |

Well this is getting pretty rich! OK, uh... I guess the adjusters would be her cross bar strap?
But really, (huff, puff) wouldn't all those pedals be fun to work up to? <wheeze>
A real beaut! |

perhaps i got you wrong Bo - those would be the lever stops
you mean those white plastic thingies on a bracket that go over the cross shafts ?
just for the record, i'm not a wiz or da man who knows
it was just my take on them tuners
the allen screws at the end of the changer on E9 (strings 5 6 9 10) are for the splits
they are where the lowest note gets tuned |

Friends
When you have two lowers below a split note (like the Franklin B to A change after the C split and Bb lower)the first lower below the split (Bb) is tuned with the extra rod in the raise portion of the changer (the note will almost always be flat after tuning the split (C). This is where you would otherwise use the set screw tuners). The terminal lower (A) is then tuned with the appropriate lowering nut, and can be stabilized with the set screw if desired.
The black nuts at the bottom of the lowering portion of the changer are usually return compensators for lowers. _________________ Steel Guitar Services:

Don; It's a big consolation that you didn't purchase this fine ZumSteel! If it's treated correctly, it will last many, many years, because; PSG's are not designed to wear out so fast as you might think! Only refurbished/refinished guitars need to be taken apart to do the job! _________________ <marquee> Go~Daddy~Go, (No), Go, It's your Break Time</marquee> L8R, jb
