Hope everyone doesn't mind if I post asking for a little advice. My father passed away about ten years ago. He had played an Emmons Lashley LeGrande III for about 2 years. I inherited this guitar. It has sat in a corner of a bedroom covered and not played. I do not play steel and it seems a shame for this to just sit there. It feels like the right time to look for a new home for this steel. I was wondering if I might get some feedback on what could possibly be a fair price range and which outlets could be a good place to find a new home.

It is a Lashley LeGrande III. S/N 1706L. I believe it was built in late 1997 to early 1998. It is an 8/10. 8 foot pedals and 10 knee levers. 8 of the knee levers are what I would call normal. 2 of the knee levers are what I think are called vertical. You push your knee up and down to work them. Dark blue mica cabinet. Here are some pictures. Thank you for any feedback.

Real nice steel, Steven. I definitely agree with Roger on the price. As far as where to advertize it, right here on the forum will reach the largest group of potential buyers. I've got a late 2005 loaded Legrande III that sold new for approx $5K. These are well made, great sounding steels - looks like your Dad's was extremely well cared for. Good luck - someone's going to get a great steel.

Looks like it has been well cared for. As far as a good estimate on the price goes, I am going to say 2500.00-2800.00. I know others have suggested more, but just look at the previous sales here on the forum. The economy has unfortunately taken a toll on here as well.

It may go for 3000.00 or slightly higher, if you are willing to wait it out.

Either way it looks like a nice one!

Hey Steve. I was a friend of your dad's. In fact, he got me one of those very luxurious tuck-and-roll embroidered covers for my Emmons guitar as well, which I cherish and is on one of my guitars right now. When you sell that guitar, I know the recipient will be very happy and proud to own it.

Even with the hurtin' economy, that's easily a $3500 guitar and it won't take long to sell.

Well, it may take a while for someone to come up with what it's worth, but bear in mind that the majority of LeGrandes for sale on here are 8+5s. This one's loaded and, while that isn't what everyone needs or wants, it's rare enough.

I'm sure the right buyer will show up, and I stick to my estimate - $3.5k to $3.7k. Nice colour, too!

(YIKES!!!! I'm starting to talk myself into this one!!! Help!)

I am a wanta-be pedal steel player and I have a Sho-Bud student model 3 pedals and 1 knee which is bear to tune. By the time I get it tuned, I don't feel like playing. I have had this guitar since the late sixties and is has been in the closet most of the time. I am thinking that if I got a decent used S10 with 3 pedals, 4 or 5 knees I would start trying to learn the thing again. I am 69 years old and need a new hobby. This guitar is way more than I was looking for but I love the Emmons sound and I just wonder if this is to much to guitar for me. I live in the Minneapolis Minnesota area so the Williams guitar company is close in case I need any work done on it. Please give me some feedback? do you think someone with limited knowledge could learn the E9th neck to start with on this? Otherwise I was thinking of getting a new GFI SD10 Ultra or Expo1. Sad

Hi Steven,

I respectfully suggest putting this into the "For Sale: Instruments" section of the forum and seeing who bites. It's a great (loaded!) steel in great condition and you may just find someone who can make it sing and who will give you a price that you both can agree on.

Speculation about what it is worth is one thing, selling it is another, and a sale is the best way of finding out what it is really worth in today's market.

You need a better guitar than that Sho~Bud Maverick but this guitar might be a little more than you can handle at the present time.
Since you are located so close to Bill Rudolph, why don't you get together with him on a guitar. I have a Williams and it is a fine instrument.

Hello Steven, I never met your dad but I was well aware of his fine playing during the mid to late 60s when I lived in southside Virginia. He was a terrific player back then, even with the single finger (pull/release) system of the Marlen. In fact, I still have a Glenn Thompson LP where your dad played on all cuts. Best wishes on the sale of his guitar.

Herb. Really nice to hear dad sent you a cover. He had his friend Sam Hiatt, who is an auto upholsterer make those. I have a black one on the Fender Twin Reverb he bought from Leonard Stadler in '70. Thank you.

George and Clyde. I am so glad you mentioned the
Glenn Thompson album. We used to have a copy when I was a kid and I don't know where it went. Is there any way either of you could make me some type of copy? I have very little recorded material and would cherish that. I have some cassette recordings dubbed down from reel to reel of the Country Gentleman TV shows from the early 60's and the WDVA radio shows, but very little. I also have 3 gospel albums he played on with The Mac McCormick Singers in the 70's. Two of those have Jimmy on guitar. Talk about twin guitars. Wow. If either of you can help please email me. BTW Clyde, I still have a Super Grit album I spin it every once in a while. Love it.

I built this guitar for Marvin and it was a retirement gift from one of his friends, Mr. Harold Truitt. It has some very interesting and unique knee lever changes. Marvin always sounded so great on his Marlen but when he started playing this guitar his sound really came alive. I believe he found it too be most inspiring and his playing arose to an astonishing level during the last years of his life. We became very close friends during this time and I miss and think of him often. If I was financially capable at this time I wouldn't hesitate making an offer. I hope it finds a worthy home.

Folks, I only have this to say. I've been brought up that a man's word is his bond. Period! And that's how I've been my entire lifetime.

So anyone interested in buying this steel, go for it.

Steven wrote me saying he had finally decided on a price, (as I'd asked him to do) that it would be going for sale on the forum for. I won't say what that price was, however, he said he felt it was a fair price. I wrote back telling him, I'd take the steel at that price. And I needed the information of where to send the money.

I never did get that information back from him. What I did get back was that he didn't have a case for it, (no big deal, they make cases every day) so that was of no concern to me. The next thing was he wanted it to go to someone who would play it? No Sh**, Isn't that what they're for?

Next he wanted someone who would not be offering it for sale,,,,,,,,,,,, Whoa!!!! That did it.. Would it have been for sale ever? Probably not, knowing me. But who is going to want to buy anything with stipulations such as that on them? A Museum possibly? Surely not anyone that I know of, regardless.

Anyway, long story short.. Yes! I would have driven down and picked it up. Yes, I would have bought a new case for it, if that's what it needed, or just about anything else as well.

The people on here who have done business with me, I'm sure will tell you, I'm fast with paying, fast on notifying and have great email reports back and forth to make sure everything is covered in detail.

However, and I'm very serious: "I wouldn't take the steel now if it were offered to me for free. And that's a gospel fact, and again, anyone who knows me also knows that's true too.

Am I more than a little disturbed? You bet I am. I was awaiting a reply back from Steven telling me where to send the money or how he wanted to be paid, etc. Then instead Steven sends me an email. Thanking me for my INTEREST in the steel.. Interest hell, it was (as far as I was concerned) a done deal, or I'd never have posted telling folks I bought it.

Well, my papa always told me, all people just aren't made of the same integrity.. And again, how right he is. Even at 94.................. Don

I didn't see the email, Don, but unless he agreed to sell it to you specifically, he has not gone back on his word. The guitar has not been offered for sale publicly on this forum. Even if it had been, a deal isn't done until the money and goods change hands.

You haven't lost a cent, so there's no harm done here.
