I guess you are asking about the half tone tuners. Usually on the E to F change on E9 neck and A to Bb on the C6 side. When I worked at Emmons we drilled them out on a Lathe. Center drill it first then use a .125 drill. Last small rat tail file it so the rod moves free. I have made them on a drill press but it's a little harder and lots of rejects.

thanx doug, IOW using a drill press you first center drilled all the way through with probably a 16th in or something bit?
I would think beginning drilling through the allen head side and making a rig in order to secure the screw perfectly vertical such as drilling and tapping a small block of aluminum and screw the allen screw into that then drill the allen screw out...something like that? |

I have made a lot of these on my lathe. You should not drill from the Allen Head end because the broach in the head is not really dead center. You will snap too many screws as the 0.129" drill is guided off center and the screw body snaps at one of the threads.
Put the cap screw in a collet in a lathe. Face off the end of the screw opposite the head, center drill a starter and then run a quality bit through using lots of cutting fluid.
If you want to make your life easier, use an 8-32 brass screw and you can get away with drilling through the off center head broach. You will need to machine a larger swivel for the 8-32, though. _________________ Chris Lucker

My friend built me those halftone tuners. I paid him 15 Euro for one tuner.
