I saw a post on ebay for a double 8 rickenbacker. The seller listed it as a d-16. I wrote him and said it was called a d-8. he sent me this link
Link to Google Books excerpt of book.
A history of Rickenbacker guitars and it indeed calls the double 8 string ric a D-16. I have never heard of that before.

Jim Palenscar has a nice one in his shop for less than that one, as I recall. (no vested interest - just info for you)

I have one of those. Great sounding guitar, lots of sustain.
First time I've seen one in that colour... all the others I've seen were bronze.

There is also a Rickenbacker DW-16 D-8, which I owned for a while, but; it was a later model and had an all wooden body, similar to the Fender Dual~Pro.

I still have mine and play it sometimes.Did a lot of TV,Radio,Nightclubs and PA's with That Guitar. Gave 237.50 for it in 1950 at $10 a month, (local squaredance paid me $10 each Saturday night). Here it is with Adkins and I, live TV 1954,Listen to Adkins hot break.

I have one of much later vintage than the one in the eBay listing (judging by the logo on mine and the bronze color). But the price this one went for recently reminds me of the steal I got on mine: $300. In perfect working order.

I saw one of these in pretty good shape recently. Actually, it had eight strings on the back neck and seven strings on the front neck.
The seven string neck played perfectly (nice sound too), but on the back neck, the lowest six strings sounded fine, the second string very weak, and the first string not at all. Effectively, the eight string neck was only a six.
It looks to me like the pickup is too short - maybe it's not really an eight string pickup? Is there any way to fix this, align it so it would work? It's a nice instrument, and I like the sound (on the strings that work), but I'm not buying it unless I can play all the strings!
