Hello Steelers
a little problem:
i tune the 5th string E open correct
i tune the kneelever lowering the E correct
after pressing the e-knee lever string e is in tune
now pressing the f lever string is correct in f
after release the f lever string e is about 10 cents out of tune
same problem with pedal a and c
is this a spring problem?
some tipps ?

Reinhard,,I presume you mean the 4th string E...Without knowing what type of steel youl have,,,I would say you may not have enough travel on the raises...You should see an adjustable stop under the guitar for the Knee lever..There is probably a locking nut on the stop,,loosen the locking nut a little and adjust the screw a couple of turns and re-tighten the locking nut...The pedals have an ajustable stop too,,so you may need to do those as well...These adjustments are fractional...After the string reaches pitch,,just give it a hair more for some lost motion....There are other things that can cause this problem as well,,but not enough travel is quite common.... Lubricate the roller nuts and between changer fingers first..Don't get oil on the strings, or in the grooves on the roller nuts...Carson

Before getting any tools out loosen the raise and lower tuning nuts at the endplate. If that changes the open E note on your steel than you are simply overtuned. To fix loosen all the tuning nuts on that string. There most likely are 3.( 2 raises and 1 lower.) Once they are loose tune your open string to pitch then slowly tune your pedal and levers. It is a very common problem and needs no special adjustments to fix.

I have a hard time thinking that multiple pedals stops would suddenly go out of adjustment at the same time, although anything is possible. Did you change the gauges of the strings you use? I have had to adjust some travels when I use a different gauge. I am having this problem on my Williams C6th neck on the G string (string 5) that I lower to F. The sets I ordered last time, I forgot to have the lighter gauge I normally use for that string substituted. It will tune but comes back real sharp and sometimes flat.
I would first try what Bob Hoffner said. Then check the stops. And make sure you guitar is lubricated.
I see in your post that this is a WBS steel guitar. I am not familiar with those.

I'm goin with overtuned (....(not enuff teavel via the pedal/knee stops causing overtightning of the tuner nuts, resulting in the E string never being able to actually rest at the changer stop when a pull isn't being executed....just my guess...Stormy.  |
