Have you ever tuned up on stage and then you had to move your steel to another part of the stage only to find out after you set it down you're out of tune again.
Don't whip out that tuner just adjust the legs until you get back in tune.
Don't tune your guitar when it's on it's side or on it's end because when you turn it up and sit it down on it's legs you'll be out of tune. No amount of adjusting on the legs will help in this case.
Another thing tune up anyway you like but play through a stereo rig and detune the one side to -15cents and the other side +15cents and that'll make a pretty wide note that the real note should fall in there someplace.
I like to play stereo because I know at least half my music is going to come out right. I got a lot more tips on tuning but I'll just let you digest this stuff first. Here in an exploded view of some of my tuning tips.

Am I missing something here?

Why would you want to, or have to tune your steel on it's side or vertically. Mine stays in tune when I move it to another place on stage, (unless I tip it over!)
