Awhile back, I started a thread in the Pedal Steel section entitled "A "true" Emmons." (now on page 6) And some of you got a kick out of it. Well, read this one! Smile
Today, I met a six-stringer and the conversation went something like this:
SS (six-stringer): So, you play steel?
Me: Yeah, that's right.
SS: I love the sound of a steel guitar!
Me: Yeah, man! Me too!
SS: That man that invented the steel guitar, Buddy Emmons, do you know where he got started?
Me: Well, I've read a little about it.
SS: Well let me tell ya'.
He then goes on to tell me that Mr. Emmons started building steel guitars in a cabin on a river near a town called Soso Mississippi. (a small town not far from where I live.) He continues...
SS: Ya' see. When Buddy Emmons invented the steel guitar, he then had to learn how to play it.
Me: Really?
SS: Yeah! Ya' see, all he had ever played was lap steels. He couldn't play his first steel so he threw it in the river and built another one.
Me: Threw it in the river?
SS: That's right. It was so complicated to play until he got frustrated and threw it in the river.
Me: Because he couldn't play it?
SS: That's right. He got so frustrated, he threw five prototypes in the river.
Me: Because he couldn't play em' right?
SS: That's right. And they say that right now when the river level drops and the water is clear, that you can still see steel guitar parts, you know, metal and stuff, and those five steel guitars laying on the bottom of the river.
Me: Is that right?
SS: Yep. That's right.

Any comments? Smile

Shorty, lets look at the bright side. BamaCharley's pen pal could be going into an in debt analysis how his renowned vertical fretboard was used as bait to catch prototype #4.

I didnt know that about Buddy. When I saw him in Kinston, NC in 1964 or 1965 with Ray Price he had learned a lot about it especially "Invitation to the Blues"
