It's actually a Bob Wills recording and is the flip side of the original and classic "Faded Love".

I just looked at the original 45 and it says "Remington-Wills".

I can't explain the second composition by Jody Reynolds. Never heard of it until now. He is the old Southern California rocker best known for "Endless Sleep".

I doubt if Wills spent 5 seconds on the song, but the boss got half credit--a common practice.

regarding the Wills 45, I thought Billy Bowman played on Faded Love or did he only sing the high harmony, or was Bowman on a later version? Were he and Remington in that band at the same time?

Bill:

Boot Heel Drag was recorded May 5, 1949, with Herb.

Faded Love was recorded April 27, 1950, with Bowman.

The first issue of both songs was on alternate sides of MGM 10786 in mid-1950. So, Boot Heel Drag was at least a year old before it was released.

The Faded Love session was Bowman's first with Wills.

The vocalist on Faded Love was Rusty McDonald, with Bowman, Jimmie Widener, and Billy Jack Wills on harmony.

McDonald was hell on wheels. Check this tune he wrote and recorded.

That's right, Herb Remington wrote "Boot Heel Drag", according to Mr. Remington, "Bob told me I needed to write a song to compete with "Steel Guitar Rag", so I came up with this little tune, the name came from the low slide; anyway it made about as much noise as the Rag." So from that I would say he did most of the writing. Wink

There are many songs written by one person but the credits on the recording will list a co-writer - usually the singer (or in this case the bandleader).

I was told Louise Rowe was also on the org. recording of "Faded Love" at least by her account as told to me by her.She played doghouse bass I was told.Maybe even sang too.

"Playboy Chimes" in A6th was easy to play (no slants) and still provided the basis for a real solid dance tune.

All those olde tunes were a great foundation for learning steel guitar........since tab was not yet common place.

I believe the original Faded Love by Bob Wills had no Steel Guitar. It just accentuated the Fiddles. It was pretty standard with Band Leaders, that if you wanted your own Instrumental recorded you had to give the Bandleaer half the song.

Just a minor correction to Charles' post: Bob wills had asked Herb to do a tune to compete with "Panhandle Rag" which Leon McAuliffe had recorded and put out only shortly before.
