I have a NV400 that has been "REPAIRED" 4 times and I refuse to throw any more money at it...so I took the chassis out of the cab and put a Peavey 100W Valve King head on top of it...and must report that it sounds pretty good...

The distortion issue seems OK.

I tried using my "Twin" but it just didn't cut it.

Anyone else using a tube amp and happy with it??

I use two Reissue Twins (not simultaneously) that I've loaded with JBL's... a D130 in one and E130 in the other. I'm happy with both.

I hear that Ken Fox' new amp is pretty special - I can't wait to try one!

I'm using one of Ken Fox's 5F8B amps and my two Standels and my original Session 400 are in the closet.

It stands out as BY FAR the best sounding steel amp I have ever played through. Ken has a real winner with this amp, IMHO. It is based on the schematic of the 1959 Fender Bassman, except it has 4 6L6s, a 15" high efficiency speaker, and more clean power than a Twin at 46#. THAT'S FORTY-SIX POUNDS -- just a little more than a Nashville 112 weighs. Plus, it's voiced for steel guitar -- set the tone controls at 12 o'clock and tweak from there -- you won't need to tweak much.

It makes me smile every time I turn it on.

I'm gonna try Larry's new amp pretty soon - I feel a major purchase coming on...

(I've just realised that he and I have a black Emmons in our avatars!)

Jack,I've sent my two LTD's back to Peavey so many times I've lost count,While they're working they kick butt.Today My Vibrosonic goes to see the only guy in Alaska who can make it sing, got a loud hum might be a power tube. The Peavey service center in Miss. is great actually cheaper to ship the amps there and back then to have our local music store try to fix em...I said try. Winking

I have a PV VK100 head coupled to a BlackWidow 15", that sounds really good. As long as the texture control switch is in AB.

Jack,
I've got and "Old" Musicman 115-65 that I played lead guitar through, Many Moons, before I even thought about learning to play Pedal Steel. It still sounds fine, and I have never had a minute of trouble with it, nor even changed a tube.

George, I have a MM 112 RD, that I bought on the Forum, that has the original tubes. Thirty years
old and sounds great. That is why US tube makers went out of business.
I guess JJ would be about the best tubes out there now. They might last a year if your lucky.

Don't be afraid to team up your tube amp with a solid state amp for another piece of tone heaven! My favorite rig some years ago was my old Session 400 and a 1965 Deluxe (non reverb) with a D120F speaker).

Rarely do I ever play without two amps, one for the audience and one for my own personal monitor. I have a little 10 watt transistor amp with a 6" speaker I use as a monitor! I just roll off the bass (so I will not blow the speaker) and use a Hum-X on the power cord on the little guy. It gives me that high end that I can';t hear with my back to the main amp.

Back in the 50's on Fender Amps we would replace the 6L6's with the Industrial grade 5u4's to supposedly got more kick. Back then you could get of couple of matched tubes for about five bucks. Today it could cost over fifty bucks. Even if you factor in Inflation, Musician's pay never did keep up.

The 5U4 is a rectifier tube and the 6L6 is a power tube. They can not be interchanged or you will let the smoke out of the amp!

The best sounding amp I have is a Peavey Mace but I can't carry it anymore so I have a Mace head and 2 l-15 cabinets.

I use a Dr. Z KT-45 and it's been nothing but reliable and has clean headroom that rivals most tube amps I've tried, including some with triple the wattage. Loud, punchy, and a very simple layout. Couldn't be happier. Oh...and the head weighs next to nothing...

No `verb though.
