Anyone here using GIMP to spruce up websites or photos or do artwork? It's a free download and so far looks a lot like Photoshop. There's an army of downloadable fonts and brushes for it not to mention templates for CD's and the like. I've been playing with it for a week now just taking the tutorial and drawing some website artwork. Just wondering if this is one of the best tools to spend time with or should I look elsewhere.

FWIW, I've been using the Gimp with Linux since 1998. I'm not a graphics pro, but I do need to work with web site photos, etc. from time to time and the Gimp has always worked for me. If you've found the tutorial, then you should be well on your way. Good luck. _________________ "For every expert, there is an equal and opposite expert." -- Arthur C. Clarke |

I guess I missed the tutorial, Gimp is part of my Ubuntu install, and I've had less than satisfactory results just winging it... thanks for the link Greg. _________________ Lost Pines Studio

I've used Photoshop (Mac and Windows) pretty much every day for the last 15 years or so, and I find that Gimp is a really lame substitute, but I haven't checked out the latest version yet. Need to do that. _________________ C#

I downloaded GIMP a long time ago, but do not use it. It is not very user friendly and doesn't do anything that other programs I have don't do. |

Have used Gimp occasionally on Ubuntu for a couple of years, but have had PhotoShop as main image handler for nearly a decade. Ditched PhotoShop last summer and downloaded Gimp on my windows machines - my main machines for design.
Now I've gotten used to Gimp's interface and capabilities, and am quite happy with it. |

Thanks for all the replies. I really thought it sucked for the 1st few days. Don't know anything about Photoshop so I can't compare it to that. I've completed 9 sections of the tutorial (about 6 hours wall clock time over a few days) and can finally use all the tools on layers with all the modes. Was really close to just giving up due to all the acronyms and obscure commands.
But... I am finally liking this tool. Have updated some graphics on my web site using the LOGO tool and the paintbrush with spectrums. It's real easy to combine photos, add layers/filters, add text, create and embellish paths etc.
So it seems like a great tool with a very steep learning curve and mabe a few YouTube tutorials would have gotten me off the ground quicker.

Photoshop has a pretty steep learning curve, too, but if you've never used it you might be happy with Gimp. There are tons of online PS tutorials, but don't know about Gimp. _________________ C#

If you're on Windows, Paint.NET is a little simpler (and leaner) than GIMP. Also the name is less offensive |
