What DI boxes are folks using to take the PSG into a mixer for live gigs?

Most pro sound guys will use a Countryman. You can pick them up most anywhere but they are expensive compared to others

I like the Countryman for an FET style DI box, but I must say that Radial seems to have taken the pro world by storm in recent years with a handful of really good passive and active DI boxes. I see them everywhere now, perhaps the new standard. I don't know for sure, but it seems like it.

Jon,
Yea, that's the one.
On the other hand, just about any DI will do ya. I have, and still do use several low end $40 type boxes as long as they have a pad and a ground lift switch on them. I haven't used a Radial but I have heard of them as well.

I use the radial when needed. I think it was like $90.00 @ sweetwater.

I go direct at the church where I play, I use a Countryman after my Digitech 2112 preamp, and power it with phantom power. I don't use an amp, I monitor with in-ears.

Even the sound guy noticed when I got my Radial J48! Very Happy
Seriously, it`s the best I`ve tried. I thought that a DI wouldn`t make a big difference live but it did...I use it for dobro live but I`ve tried it on bass and steel in the studio, great results. The difference is more obvious with acoustic instruments but anyone looking for a new DI should check it out.

The Radial j48 can't be beat. For direct recording or live put one of Brad's Steel Guitar Black Box's in front of it. It's become a go to combination for me.

Folks, Radial also makes a less expensive line of DI's. I use the Pro DI 2, which is a passive stereo DI in the same size box as a single DI. It doesn't have the Jensen transformers like the JDI, but something that is "close enough". The Jensen is suppose to have a flat frequency response from 5 hz to 40K. This transformer is flat from 10 - 18K. The folks at Radial told me nobody has been able to hear the difference yet.

I have a J-48 as well. It is totally clean and uncolored, however I think it sounds better with acoustic instruments. The transformer DI's do have some color to their sound, which I think is desirable. I feed mine from a Revelation or Classic preamp. The signal is very hot. Hot enough I've distorted my J-48. The harder I hit the transformer in the DI the better it sounds to me. It gives a natural sounding "rounded" sign wave that resembles a microphone.

I prefer my Radial Pro DI 2 over any mic' I've used in a live performance. It's small and fits in my steel seat. It goes everywhere I do, so my sound is always the same.

This is slightly OT, but has anyone tried the Radial Dragster pickup load correction device?

Radial also makes an "Amplifier DI Box" that goes between your amp head and speakers. I find this to be a very interesting prospect for use with a tube amp in particular. Any one try one of these or have any thoughts?

I have been using the Peavey EDI for years. Does a great job. Out of production but there are still some new ones out there ($49.95). Goes between the speaker and the speaker output. Has a timbre adjustment on it as well

Gary, I used one of these with a Hot Plate in my guitar/lapsteel rig the past two years and they're great. My in-ear mix sounded great, and you can dial up the hot plate if you need stage volume, without disrupting the FOH signal. I would assume these would be great for steel too if you needed stage volume.

I use a Hughes & Kettner "Red Box"
Had it for about 15 years, no problems.
