Topic: iPhone vs Blackberry vs Droid? |

Am fixin' to get a new phone. Need calling, email, and web browsing. Trying to choose between these 3 phones. Any opinions out there? For the Blackberry, I'm looking at the Storm2, which is touch-screen and supposed to be upgraded from the original Storm which I hear had some problems.

I dumped my Blackberry after checking out the Android. The Android is way better for almost everything. The iphone is very nice but I spent years getting dicked around by ATT. They had some extra charge on my bill every month for between $4 and $8 that I would need to spend a half hour on the phone to get to the guy who would say "Oh it looks like a mistake. I'll take that right off your bill". Turns out they got busted by the FCC because it was corporate policy to hide extra fees in the bills because most people don't check or go to the trouble. The Android is open source which I prefer to Apple's proprietary system. The iphone apps are more happening at the moment but that is changing very quickly.

Hi Jim,
I have a T-mobile G1 which is an Android phone and I love it. I went to the t-mobile store looking to buy a blackberry to replace my laptop. The guy at the store showed me the android phone and I was sold. It is good at all the basics, web browsing, email, text, also has some fun applications. I completely recommend the droid line.

iPhone
....best cell phone I ever had
....small
....incredible app selection (including Peterson strobe Tuner)
....no problems in over 2 years
....'search" function will automatically search, address book, calender, apps and iTunes. |

I Phone....  I don't like the key board on the phone your looking at...att has it's ups and downs, but the phone is great... go to att store and play with one, and the same with your other choices, in the end, it's you using the phone, it's just like tone, & guitars!! we all have a opinion... |

I had a BB Storm for quite a while, and recently the latest update. I finally had it 2 weeks ago, and went with an iPhone. BB will always be a "wannabe" IMO. I constantly had problems, and the latest update to v5 brought back some previous problems.
The Droid phones may get close to the iPhone, but being new I feel there will be bugs as usual. The apps for the iPhone as well as the accessories being built are plentiful. Also, I have had XM for several years. The XM app for the iPhone along with the SkyDock sealed the iPhone for me... |

I'm a Palm Pre user. It sucks! The audio quality is the worst I've ever had at any price. Apps and email work fine. If it was not provided by my employer I would have s-canned it months ago.
I know it was not on your list but I thought you should be aware so you don't get stuck with one.

IPhone definitely. AT&T coverage is kinda hit or miss, but the phone is awesome.
One thing you'll like is the tuner apps on the iphone. I'm using one called ClearTune along with an input cable from peterson:

Peterson has a tuner app, but it doesn't do tempering... but ClearTune does, and the peterson cable works perfectly with it as well. ClearTune also allows you to customize your temperaments. This app is 4.99. The cable from peterson is 12.99. So for under 20 bucks you've basically got a really good tuner for your pedal steel.
I also have a Peterson StroboStomp pedal and I still prefer using it with my main steel rig, but I do use the iphone tuner quite often and it does the job just fine.

| Actually the cable I have from Peterson plugs into the headphone/mic jack of the iphone. It is not the same as a standard 1/4" to headphone jack though because there is an extra connection in there. (I tried using a standard 1/4" to headphone connector and it wouldn't work for the iphone) |

I've heard several people say that the ATT service is not as good as Verizon's. What does that actually mean? That you can't get coverage in some smaller cities and towns? Or on a highway between major metro centers? Or, you get coverage but more dropped calls? Or..?

Yeah with AT&T, I drop calls in certain areas. unfortunately the lower level of my house is real bad. I've heard similar complaints from other people around here with AT&T (regardless of whether they have an iphone or not).
And to be fair, I have heard alot of good things about the droid phones, but I don't have any first hand experience with them. I'm sure they are good phones, but I believe that at this point the iphone app store has much more to offer.
Also another good thing about the iphone is there are tons of external devices that support the iphone (for example I have a car stereo that my iphone plugs right into, and I have a iHome alarm clock where I can dock my iphone to charge it and listen to music, etc).
Ultimately it's just a matter of preference. But I just wanted to share my experience and preference for the iphone since I am also a steel player and music lover and I think the iphone is great for my needs. I hope this helps. |

| I've been really happy with my iphone over the last 6 months, but recommend getting a helper book with it as the documentation that comes with the phone is weak. I've downloaded all my BIAB tunes on it and can take it to an instrumental gig all by itself; no laptop. |

Another option, The HTC Hero by sprint is rated as the best android phone. Also Sprint is releasing the 4g network soon so waiting a bit may be a good idea as Im sure 4g phones will pop out of nowhere fast.

Technically true, David. But in the US the only other national GSM carrier is T-Mobile. Although their customer service is better than AT&T, their 3G coverage area is even smaller. So if you're not in one of their 3G service areas, all those nice iPhone features are going to default to the much slower EDGE service. It's not a fun experience.
Unlocked or not, the iPhone won't work on Verizon, Sprint/Nextel, Metro PCS, etc. So unless you're traveling internationally, an unlocked iPhone doesn't give you many additional choices.
Jim, take a close look at the Consumer Reports article in the previous link. AT&T not only lost, they came in <i>dead last</i> in every category. Industry knowledge for some time has been that the iPhone's huge sales are killing AT&T's already burdened network. iPhone users naturally want to make use of all make use of all those great data features that suck up bandwidth (like video) and it's putting such a strain on AT&T that even their voice calls are suffering.
I read a great comparison yesterday between the Droid and the iPhone but unfortunately can't find the link. But there are lots of similar articles out there so you might search Google and read a few. The conclusions in the article I read were that if you're on AT&T now and are quite happy with the service, keep it. If not, get the Droid. Verizon is not without their own customer service issues but their network quality is absolutely tops. The iPhone is still probably the best overall smartphone out there but the Droid is very, very close. In other words, Best Phone on Crappy Network vs. Almost as Good Phone on Best Network.
IMO, Blackberry is great for business users because of their robust e-mail features, but their smartphones (which run Windows Mobile) aren't in the same class as either the iPhone or the Droid. |

The iPhone wifi connectivity is nice.
After playing with it for a while,
the iTunes ability to back up
everything to computer is nice.
And restore as needed.
I'll upload some tunes and videos,
then replace them with fresh ones.
I upload teaching videos to watch.
Must get the data plan-unlimited 30.00 a month.
It is pricey. Can extend basic warranty for 1 year.
AppleCare is around 70.00.
Also, get your homeowners' insurance
to do accidental loss/damage.
Been using one now about 2 years.
No regrets.

david that is correct, the i phone is a GSM based technology (which is T Mobile and ATT in the US) If you travel internationally, GSM is the most widely installed wireless technology worldwide and GSM phones typically will work on any GSM network (unless of course they are locked to a specific network). Most, if not all, GSM phones can be unlocked by an experienced technician.
Sprint and Verizon use CDMA technolgy. Great technology, but if you travel internationally, the phones will not work, even on other CDMA networks. Hence, Verizon provides 'rental' phones for their customers who need to use them overseas.

| I, too, have been waiting a bit to get a "Smart" phone but have not wanted to use AT&T due to the coverage issue and like my current provider which is Verizon. The IPhone is supposed to release a version with Verizon the middle of next year but those of us who are members of the immediate gratification era have a hard time waiting that long- esp. with the release of the Droids which, according to my sons who are way ahead of me in this stuff, are popping up all over the place. Their suggestion to me was to wait until the 1st of the year then make a decision. |
