Hi.
I'm looking for songs, that were #1 hits, featuring the pedal steel (in a major role).
Pop/rock genres, no country music.
I have already:
- All I wanna do (Sheryl Crow)
- Heart of gold (Neil Young)
but there has to be more then these...
I looked around quite some, but if any of you forum members have any ideas, they're welcome |

I have the Billboard Encyclopedia, and according to their charts, Crow's "All I Wanna Do" didn't make #1, but peaked at #2. "Teach" never even made it into the Top-10, peaking out at #16. "Afternoon Delight", by The Starland Vocal Band did, however, make it to #1 in June of '76. The late Danny Pendleton did the steel in that one! "Crimson And Clover", Tommy James and the Shondells' #1 hit was said to have pedal steel in it, but it's nearly inaudible (to me, anyway).
If I can think of any other possibles, I'll look 'em up and post them. |

There's little if any steel on the radio version, but the extended length version has the pedal steel in there at quite a good clip. |

Don't know if it was #1, but Elton John's "Tiny Dancer" featured B.J. Cole prominently on pedal steel.
Were any of Linda Ronstadt's hits #1? Maybe Blue Bayou?
Looking for a true #1 may be setting the bar pretty high. If you look at say the top 20, you might find several fairly prominent hits. |

"Peaceful Easy Feeling" featured B-Bender guitar, not steel.
I don't recall steel on "Take It Easy"--the Eagles version, anyway.
Doubt if either was #1. |

In the words of the late Gilda Radner: "Never mind"....
Sorry Pete, I somehow missed your post referencing TYC
Also, according to the always accurate Wikipedia TYC charted number 16 in 1970. So, I guess it doesn't count afterall.
Keep on pickin'

Eagles "Best of My Love"
Judy Collins "Someday Soon"

Nope. That probably wouldn't count, since it was a different (later, non-charting) release.
Chuck Berry's "School Days" only made it to #3
Judy Collins' "Someday Soon" only made #55
Linda Ronstadt's "Blue Bayou" topped at #3
The Eagles "Best Of My Love" is a winner, though! It made #1 in Nov. '74 |

I dont think it was a number #1 but "Jennifer Eccles" by The Hollies has a nice little pedal steel break. That's one of the earliest Rock songs that I have heard that has a pedal steel. |

Billy Vera used a pedal steel for "At This Moment".
According to Wikipedia it originally charted at #79 in 1981 but got a second chance on the billboard charts in 1986 and made it to #1.

Wasn't "Right Down the Line" by Gerry Rafferty with BJ Cole a #1?
"Tears From Heaven" Jay Dee with Eric Clapton made it to #2... _________________ John Macy

It's So nice to be with you by Gallery went to #4 in 1972. It had a really nice turnaround in the song, not sure who the player was. |

I'll give you a hint. It was the very first recording by the same player who's #1 these days! |

Darn...sounds like no, or almost no #1 hits with pedal steel on them. That's it gentlemen, we're doomed and there is apparantly no future in this instrument, unless Jam Master PJ Diddy McWaldo decides to use a pedal steel on his next Hip Hop/Gangsta/Country extravaganza. We probably should put them all back in the closet and dedicate the rest of our lives to public service, or at least origami. All the years I've wasted...I'm so depressed. I think I'll just head off to the closet, turn off the lights and cry. Maybe I'll listen to TYC and curse the fact that it never reached #1.

I seem to remember that a band called 'Juicy Lucy' or something like that did well in the UK for a while. I don't know who played PSG for them. Dunno if they ever made #1 but they sure should have.
Nothing to do with cheese burgers by the way!
