He had a great run, but it's still very sad to see him and the era of journalism he represented fully move into the past tense. Just the sound of his voice always said to me, "No matter how dark it looks, it will be OK in the end - this is America." The mold was smashed a long, long time ago. RIP. |

The average news soundbite per topic today: 7 seconds.
The average news slot per topic in Cronkite's hayday: 42 seconds.
Well, at least that's what someone just said on MSNBC - sounds about right. Explains a lot. |

Walter Cronkite possessed two things missing in most modern television personalities - credibility and sincerity. He was probably the last of the generation of newsreaders that believed they, and the media in which they worked, were servants of the people, and their duty was to inform, allowing the public at large to draw its own conclusions.
What a contrast to the media of today. Walter's passing leaves shoes that are impossible to fill. A great and unique man, whose reputation extended far beyond the shores of the USA. _________________ The steel guitar is a hard mistress. She will obsess you, bemuse and bewitch you. She will dash your hopes on what seems to be whim, only to tease you into renewing the relationship once more so she can do it to you all over again...and yet, if you somehow manage to touch her in that certain magic way, she will yield up a sound which has so much soul, raw emotion and heartfelt depth to it that she will pierce you to the very core of your being. |
