I need about 10 of these model George L thumb picks. They were discontinued some years back. It's the only thumb pick I am comfortable with. Please help me find some!

I've had a similar problem with the white National thumb picks. I ordererd a couple from Elderly Instruments about 5 years ago when I first started playing steel. A few weeks ago the last one broke and I ordered replacements- but they were much bigger! I'm not talking about the fit (which I alter anyway by soaking it in hot water and fitting it to my thumb) but the size is much wider, containing more plastic. I compared it to my old broken ones and the new one is much bigger. The new ones feel really awkward to me and its really messing me up- and I was already having a hard enough time! I keep getting the pick caught up in the strings.
Does anyone know where to get the other, smaller National thumb picks?

How many hours per week must one play in order to break a THUMB PICK?

The only one I've EVER broken in many decades was STEPPED ON! I've only owned perhaps six, during this same time span.

I've had exceptionally good luck, it would appear.

Ray, you probably were not generating enough heat to hurt your thumbpick Smile

Jim:

I understand why it's an emergency! My National thumbpick has about seen it's day and I just know that any day it's going to break and gorilla glue just won't fix it. Fred Justice found me a new National thumbpick that fits perfectly at the steel show. Now I'm just waiting for the old one to break since I've probably been using it for about 10 years.

Hmmm....now that I have a replacement, it'll probably be another 10 years before my old one breaks and I'll have forgotten where I put the replacement.

Oh well............

Cool

My point was that the FIRST one could be an emergency, but the other NINE gotta be backups, to be used over the next century (unless you lose them all the time like I do!) Wink

I play so darn fast I burn up my metal picks. You know kinda like a main bearing on a crankshaft with no oil. You should see how fast my fingers move. Can I buy metal picks by the gross?

Sincerly

If you can heat them in warm water to mold them, why not trim one to your preference?

What would I use to trim it with? It seems like the edges wouldn't be very smooth if I did.

I've only broken 2 in 5 years. I only practice 10 hours or so a week, but the first one broke while playing with a band 4-6 nights a week, 4-5 hours a night.
I force my thumb pick on really tight so it doesn't slip, I think that's what causes it to eventually break rather than long hours practicing.

I guess it would be rough, at that. Your post however led me to thinking about moulding the thumb pick thanks

If Bobbe Seymour doesn't have any i wouldn't know where to look. Seems like he has all of the other picks there are.

Jim, those GL's are really comfortable. I used them for years. They do tend to wear out the point of the blade for me as I pick with a pretty strong attack. I'm now using their heavier black ones that I reshape and trim so that they have a longer blade.

I still have 6 new GL picks of the original model like in your photo but with the blue lettering instead of red if you are interested. I will send you a pm about them as my email is still unreliable.

Also pictured....pretty similar, a slightly different feel and compound and not quite as comfortable as the GL's are the John Pearse. http://www.jpstrings.com/braccess.htm

I broke a plastic one in 1965. It was too tight on my thumb and I tried to open it out, but it snapped rather than bent. Sad Other than that I still have every thumb pick I've ever owned.

Try soaking them in hot water first, then they will bend without breaking.

Ha ha Laughing Never tried that, but the hot water works really well. Just hot water from the tap- it doesn't have to be boiled.
