I'm reminded of Merle Haggard's comment on preparing to play at the White House, "If I can play fiddle for the great Bob Wills, I can damned sure play 'California Blues' for Richard Nixon." Laughing

One of the students attending the White House gig asked Alison Krause where she got her fiddle and Alison told the story. There was a man in her home town who collected fiddles but had lost his hearing in World War II and couldn't play anymore. Alison would go over to his house and play one of his fiddles which she really liked and thought sounded good. The man did not sell away his fiddle collection but when he died his wife finally sold this fiddle to Alison. Since then, this is the only fiddle she's ever played and, as you know, Alison plays with a very exceptional tone. And speaking of good tone on a fiddle, she also mentioned the late, great Randy Howard as one of her mentors and heroes.
