I'm going to one of the annual events that qualifies as a gig at the end of this month. It's a big family reunion on a family campground on the family ranch. It lasts for 4 days. For the first time, I will have a psg. I go to 3 or 4 other events in the course of most years that involve camping out. Any body have any experience and therfore sage advice for me? Should I just continue to take a lap guitar to stuff like this?

If you are of small stature, it could be advantageous to take a pedal steel, as you won't need a tent Very Happy
Simply assemble the steel, drape a cloth over it, and crawl under it, snug as a bug in a rug Exclamation

Always be sure to tie a rope to your steel at night and hoist it up high in the air off a tree limb...

You don't want the bears to get it! Whoa!

As Rick says, bring a 4x4 sheet of plywood or OSB. I did the same thing at the race track back in May. I also used a couple of 2x4s screwed in to the plywood to level it up. Finally, I screwed a 2x4 to the front to act as a lip so the PSG couldn't slip off the front. Have fun!

This the exact reason I bought my first Dobro ( a 7 stringer) in 1972, so I could throw it in the back seat of my car and take it with me to Colorado. At that time I had a C# Minor (E6th) on it. Leave the pedal stuff at home.

Thanx,
Jim

PS- Yes, there is a 'Rocky Mountain High' when you are sitting alone at the top of Engineer or Stoney Pass playing you Dobro to the mountains.

I hope that you are joking.

I can not fathom camping with a PSG. How does one pack in an amp, PSG, and all of the other accessories?

Even in a Park which did allow you to drive to somewhere near your tent site you will be carrying a lot of equipment. You will be potentially be exposing all of your gear to weather and extremes of temperature and humidity which it would not normally be exposed.

If you were not really camping but traveling in a Tour Bus, Motor Home, or possibly a Travel Trailer which had an onboard generator then I could fathom it but the idea of moving my Steel and gear over unfriendly terrain sounds like asking for trouble.

I can see packing in a headset amp and a single neck lap steel in a gigbag but a PSG is is too heavy. Heck I move my PSG on a hand truck whenever it is in its case (with rare exception).

I'm mostly worried about unlevel terrain, dust and moisture. It is car camping. So there won't be alot of moving around. But hauling a 4x4 piece of plywood with 2x4's nailed to it will take some doing. The first venue will have electricity. For the others I was thinking of a Hog 60. I think I will take the lap guitar with stand this year. Too short a notice to get my act together. But maybe next year. Thanks for y'all's replies.

I've actually used my Vox DA5 on some gigs where we had a drummer. It can run on batteries.

I think the Carter Starter makes a great campground guitar. I didn't worry about mine being out in the elements all weekend. Weight was not an problem. I could have used more insect repellant on the strings though Oh Well A flat surface at the campsite is a big plus.

Practicing at the campsite

Later and louder...

Well I once took my old Sho~Bud on a moose hunting trip. It was pretty beat up anyways and I wanted it for the beer drinking social evenings in the bush. We did have a camp although with six guys in a 10 x 16 space there wasn't a lot of room to set it up. It stayed set up all weekend though and I played it through a battery powered Pignose amp. Where there's a will there's a way. My biggest fear was that someone swinging out of a top bunk for a nature call would make kindling wood out of it. Someone did land on my Labrador Retriever one night...but she was a resiliant old girl and fared better than the guitar would have.
