When I was down in San Antone last Feb., I heard some steeler. . . I think his name was Randy Gilliam. Pretty good picker, as I remember. _________________ Randal Smith alias Smitty the Kid

Tommy Detamore is a monster picker and Doug Sahm is probably my all time favorite musician from San Antone, who was a pretty good picker himself. |

That's a list of Texas legends. I think Herb Steiner is considered "Austin area", but he ought to be included in any Texas list.
I'm fortunate to play all the time with Roger Edgington. I'm always amazed and never disappointed.
There is such a wealth of wonderful steel talent in SA and around Texas that you should never have to look far on Saturday night for a dancehall with a crying, heartfelt steel guitar playing all the hits. We are blessed, for sure.

Bobby Dardeman doesn't get out much but I think from time to time he checks the forum ... I saw him a year ago, he's doing alright and he still has a stash of steel guitars ... |

Bobby Dardeman is a really musically savvy guy. You can discuss any type of complex theory or jazz material and he knows the original keys, chords, and has lots of ideas on how to perform it. Only problem is after his stroke years ago he still has "no chops". (his own words).
I think if he hadn't needed to make a living with music, and fed the family, he would have developed his career around a jazz style rather than country. |

You might also add Boo Miller to the San Antonio list. These are just San Antonio pickers. If you listed all of Texas it would be huge. People in Texas pretty much expect a country band to have a steel and a fiddle or two. |

The greater San Antonio area, in which I include Bulverde, New Braunfels, Seguin, Floresville, Castroville, Jourdanton, Pleasanton, Helotes, Bandera, and Lytle, has ferociously great steel players.
Omitted from Randy's list was Don Woodbury, formerly with Michael Martin Murphey's band, who lives in Bulverde. Also Butch Cornwell lives nearby. Gary Maddox and Greg Humphries also are good players from that area.
I 'preciate the include, but I am an Austin player... though it seems half my jobs are either in SA, New Braunfels, Bulverde, or Seguin lately. Dave Biller and Neil Flanz are Austin players, as are Bobby Snell, Danny Hawk, Ethan Shaw, Danny Johnson, Nathan Fleming, Scott Walls, Marty Muse, Emmett Roch, Gil Thomas, Geoff Queen, Jim Loessberg, Buzz Evans, James Shelton, Roy Glaze, and... ?
There's lots of players north of Round Rock and west of Dripping Springs that I've haven't included. _________________ My rig: Infinity and Telonics.
Son, we live in a world with walls, and those walls have to be guarded by men with steel guitars. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Lt. Weinberg? |
