Has anybody else tried these Timara Drop D tuners?
I’ve been having a lot of fun using this little gismo. I put 4 of them on my lap steel and I can go between 3 tunings on a single neck without re-tuning.
I can now go from C tuning:
e C A G E C (high to low)
-to A tuning:
e C# A F# E C# by using 3 of theTimara's
...and then to B11 tuning:
e C# A F# D# C# by using the 4th Timara.
Pretty wild, Huh?

I have two of the Keith/Scruggs banjo tuners on my Chandler lap steel which are cool. I also have a set of 'em on a Dobro. It's tuned to a B6th and the pegs raise the 1st & 5th D# strings to E......JH in Va.

How accurate do they tune? Can you switch back and the original pitch is unchanged?

| I found a Hise Mfg. "Multi-Harp-Triplex" three position camshaft/lever operated unit from the 1940s on the Forum that gives me three tunings on one D-8 neck , A-6th , E-13th and E-6th(C# min). Really works O.K. and stays in tune !! Saves lugging a T-8 or Quad around !! Eddie "C" |

...pretty well, each one is independent and fine tunable by the little screw on top. It’s like putting your finger on the string at the peg head and pushing it to the desired note. When you let go it returns to the original pitch fairly accurately. There is a “break-in” period after installing new strings and will probably always stretch a little, but after a short while they become very stable.
I’ve just found a 4th tuning using this set-up:
Jerry Byrd’s C6th added 7th:
e C A G E C#
...and with no re-tuning  |

Oh...and since my 7th string is tuned to A, it makes this tuning that much the sweeter all around.

Yes, I really like it too! It was done by Dave down at String Theory Music in Boca Raton,Fl. He also inlayed one on the front apron, did the extremely nice Walnut finish and installed all of the electronics. I highly recommend his work.
This photo was taken before the Timara's were installed.

They remind me of the early, original Scruggs tuners. The first ones were cam levers, the later ones are Scruggs Keith tuners( I think that's the correct name, not sure) where the levers were eliminated, and the mechanism was built into the tuner body. I built a set back in about '62/3 for my homemade 5-string. Got the plans either from the Seeger book, or maybe the Scruggs book.
Might just get some for one of my bottleneck guitars. I could toggle between D and G tunings. |
