Hey folks, I'm a little embarassed to ask after all these years playing I should know where to find them but how do you find Major 7th and Minor 7th chords on the E9th. I'm sure I play them but don't know how to identify them. What strings and pedals/ levers. Thanks ahead of time.

hi Ed, long time....

For the Maj 7 chord, two frets up from the open postion with AB pedals, root on the 9th string.
For the Minor 7, two frets down from the open position with AB pedals, root on the 7th string.

Tab:

  GMaj9   Gm7
1--------------
2--------------
3--------------
4--5--------1--
5--5A-------1A-
6--5B-------1B-
7--5--------1--
8--------------
9--5-----------
10-------------

I went ahead and included the Maj 9 on the top of the major chord, 'cause it's basically the same chord and functions in the same way. If you want the Maj 7 on top, just leave out string 4. There are other places too, of course.
All the best,
-John

Ed-I am glad to see you showing interest in chords usually found on C6. John has printed the usual forms of the Maj7-9 and min7 positions. Both very good and versatile. We used to use them to jazz up the E9. Lots of good chords here useing the F knee lever and Eb knee lever with them too....al.Smile Cool

Two more positions, Ed
Open position / no bar / no pedals
All strings except 9
EMaj7 = 8,6,5,2
you can play 8,6,5 then hit 2
or you can just play 6,5,2 and let the bass player play the root
Other inversions are possible using any string other than 9

Open position / E to D# lever
Root is on 6 and 3
All strings except 9
G#mi7 = 6,5,4,1
(as above you can play 6,5,4 then hit 1)
you can also strum 6 and 5 with your thumb, play 4 with index and 1 with middle
Other inversions use anything other than the 9th string

There are also 3-note substitutes for each
For example, to play CMaj7 at the third fret, just let off the B pedal and hold A. An Em triad has the same notes as CMaj7 without the root (E G B)

To play Am7 just play CMaj -- it is the same notes (C E G) as Am7 (A C E G) without the root. Again, the bass or some other instrument will usually be playing the root.

Just some other options.

The cycle of min. 3rds for the m7, as C maj for Am7.
Just move up a min 3rd and play the major.

The cycle of Maj 3rds for the for the Maj7, as C#m for A Maj7.
just move up a Maj. 3rd and play the min.

You could think in terms of a 6th of the perfect 5th for the Maj7 as E6 for A Maj7.
