Topic: Help with age ID on Magnatone lap |

A friend has an old magnatone lap 6 (I'll try to post pics later if need be).
SN is 54718. Walnut(?) finish, three Kluson tuners per side, 21 fret markers,
2 big black knobs, single coil black w/silver border PU. Single, double and triple star fret markers, along with diamonds and rectangles.
Any ideas on this one?

That's mid-50s G65. Great little guitar.

| I once owned an 8 str. version, of the natural finish model. I wasn't in love with the overall tone from it like I am with my 50's era Varsity which this one pictured evolved from. Sold it eventually to 'Mr. Hollywood', the legendary Sonny Kamahele, and he used it as his primary steel at his last Waikiki gigs until he retired. I wish I had it now, even tho it was more heavy on the mid-range w/little bottom and less sustain. |

Mike, that top one is it, though yours is in better condition. Laurie's has a different pickup, though--it's black with just a bit of silver trim, no pole pieces or screws. Is it possibly a replacement?
We plugged it in (it had 5 decrepit strings in an F6 tuning) and it sounded great, 24" scale. The volume knob is non-functional and the input jack is intermittent, but it has great potential. She hopes to clean it up and use it as a starter.
I started this thread in a hurry as we were going to play a wedding--came back a couple of hours later and there was our answer, thanks so much for the quick reply. |
