I'm looking for info on this guitar for a friend who inherited it. He wants to know what it is worth and if there is any interest in it.
This is what Buddy Emmons recorded "Steel Guitar Jazz" on, right?

| The Kalina was a colorful model Harlin, I guess made to appeal to the Hawaiian players. Some of these have useless fretboards (just like the one pictured), on which the fret spacings are all wrong. For most players, that makes them almost unplayable. |

| I hope Jussi wasn't serious saying Buddy's Steel Guitar Jazz album was recorded on a left handed MultiKord?? That's just a picture somebody grabbed for the album cover & even got negative up side down! I'm sure that information has been posted on the forum some time in the past?! |

| Joel I bought that exact same model on e-bay for $225 buy it now. I replaced the fret board and also changed the cables with steel rods.it has a good tone. |

Hey Jussi, nice to hear from you. I really enjoyed your latest album, that Bigsby tone kills me on that original steel tune.
Doug - I know Jussi was kidding, he jokes about everything except that Bisby! That should be another thread - bad misrepresentations of pedal steels. The cover of Lloyd Green's "Big Steel Guitar" is pretty bad, and what's on the cover of Jimmy Day's "Steel and Strings?" |

An 8-string Multi-Kord (but not the "Kalina" model). |

I still have a Kalina Multi-Kord my father bought new for me in 1948 when I was ten yrs old. I haven't played that one for years, but it always had a good tone and I never had tuning / fret location problems with mine because of the fretboard itself.
Temperature changes are another factor though because of the cast aluminum body which is subject to some slight expansion & contraction having some effect on the tuning.
I got it out a couple of years ago and the fretboard has finally cracked with age though.
Harlins had an earlier model and like this one, it has an all cast aluminum body but wasn't as streamlined as this one The edges were more squared instead of rounded.
Value wise and I am only guessing but I would say the earlier above E-Bay price is about right for that model.
As I have stated in past posts Jay Harlin of Harlin Bros. held the first patent on a pedal steel guitar. |

Non-steel players are apt to get confused on Multi-Kords, because the tuners are at the opposite end to where they're expected to be, as is the pedal mechanism, so it's not surprising that from time to time a novice will get the negatives reversed. The give-away as to which side is towards the audience is the fingerboard....  |
