I had the privilege of working at the Abbey Road Studios in London in 1973 when Pink Floyd were recording " Dark Side of the Moon", but that is another story...
Pink Floyd have, unbenownst to some steel guitar aficionados, sometimes featured lap steel in their recordings, and to my listening ears, done so very tastefully and with skillful mixing techniques. Two captivating tracks, in my opinion, are " Great Gig in the Sky" and "Breathe". Lap steel features on some other tracks on other albums, but not too often. David Gilmour plays lap steel and you may look up the following link to learn more:

Are there any Pink Floyd fans in the Forum.....?

"One of these days" from Meddle has just a bit of highly over driven lap on it as well. Buy Gilmour's Live in G'dansk DVD for a real Lap/weiss treat.
Tell me about Rick Wright playing the Abbey Road Hammond RT3! His Hammond sound is better on that album than any other. |

David Gilmour is one of me heroes, and is still playing, recording and performing today.
His latest album, On An Island, is his most brilliant work IMHO and features lap steel and Weissenborn, on his last tour he had both Stringmaster and Weissenborn setup on stage, and his keyboard player was playing a Rick on one song.
Here's a video of David playing a Fender Stringmaster for the solo to "Wots Uh the Deal", an old, old Floyd tune (notice the use of flatpick!!!).

|

Spot the steel guitarist...
Yes, i was there, though I honestly do not remember this picture (taken for publicity, the control room window has a picture of the moon as a gimic)...Pink Floyd did not allow studio staff to hear them recording, which they did all night every night for a long time, I cannot remember. They brought their own recording engineer. I also met Hank Marvin during my work at Abbey Road installing the Neve mixing console. EMI had a mixing console designed specifically for Abbey Road, Studio 2 , I think it was.

Disclaimer: I was not playing steel guitar at the time... |

My son, John, is 100% Pink Floyd fan. He plays guitar, sings and does a real nice job on "Comfortably Numb". I guess that's the title or maybe that's just some of the words. ? ? ? I also enjoy "The Wall" and several other Pink Floyd recordings.

Can anyone hear a very faint pedal steel on the song Wish You Were Here? |

Jonathan, thanks, I will purchase it as soon as it gets on Amazon..., looks like a great read. I just ordered Geoff Emerick's book" Here There and Everywhere" a few days ago. Geoff used to visit Neve very often, during my time there (1970 - 1981). A great recording engineer he, knew exactly what he wanted, a good customer.
Ron, yes, I am the guy in pink... funny thing is that I do not recall that pic at all, but I did have long hair in those days...maybe it was not even me....or they took the pic without me knowing.... I looked a bit like that (the guy with his back to the camera)...
Tom, that's a great video, the kind of steel playing that's more likely to get steel guitar re-incarnated in this day and age, I feel..a bit of a far cry from " Blue Hawaiian Moonlight"...
Wally, I always suspected there was a dark secret hidden side of you... jokes aside, though, you have a wonderfully wide taste in and knowledge of music, as I have come to know you over the years!
Josh, I prefer using a flatpick instead of finger picks while trying to get a bluesy sound, as in the bluesy part of my rendition of "Help Me Make It Through the Night".
Rich, thanks for the pointer to " Meddle"
Mark, love " One of These Days" too..lap steel is so much more expressive than slide/bottleneck I feel....

A buddy of mine in College had the making of the Darkside of Moon DVD, in it Gilmour says that he used a pedal steel on "Breathe" he sits down behind a "cream" Fender 800 (I think)and plays some of the chords on the intro. |
