Sorry for the late reply. I thought this was a joke!
You don't "READ" serial numbers of most steel guitar manufactures. Some companies, like Sho-Bud for instance, the serial number is pretty much meaningless. Fortunately for you, such is not the case with BMI. Just give Don Fritch, or Dan Burnham a call at the factory. They can look up the serial number for you and tell you anything you want to know concerning that guitar, as it left the factory.
Dan is on the Forum here regularly. He should be easy to contact.
Cheers!

Mr. Klemp:
I assume, but do not know, that the serial numbers are sequential. Terry Wood would probably know, and Don Fritschie would know for sure.
Mine is a U-12, and its serial number is 1328. I picked it up from the factory on July 19, 2003. _________________ Very truly yours,

I would say that Dan Burnham probably has it right on your guitar's date, but I wonder about the 10 stringer as Zane King's. Unless Zane was trying for a more commerical sound on some recording sessions because he most often played the Zane Beck tuning and commonly on a 12 string guitar.
By the way, Dan Burnham plays Zane Beck's tuning and he is one of the few that I know who can play it like Zane Beck did.
Next, Zane Beck stamped the exact date and my first and last initials on the underneath side of my 14 string BMI, when I picked it up at his house the fall of 1984. I watched him do it.
I know he did some unusal things on steels like that at various times. He was a great guy. I really miss Zane Beck and some of the other real steel Greats!
I am currently playing a 12 string keyless BMI and still trying to get used to it after 25 years of playing the 14 stringer.
