This is my second thread on this subject.
2 questions please.
1. Can bad tubes cause your bass response to diminish?
2. What are the best reasonably priced tubes to purchase & should I change all tubes or just the 6L6's?
Thanks in advace |

Had it happen with cheap Chinese preamp tubes on a Peavey Triumph some years ago.
If you are losing bass on both channels then there may be an issue with tube #6 or other issues.
I do not guess on things like that, I bench test to check the amp.

That's a matter of opinion, I would suppose. Change all the tubes? No idea if they are bad or not. Could be a waste of good money!
JJ/Telsa is all I use in my shop. SED are fine tubes as well. |

Thanks Ken I really appreciate it. As I understand it you don't work on reissues. Is that right?

Ken, one more question. Just on a whim which tube is the 6th tube so maybe I'll change it out just to see.

I agree avoid the SED's I am advising a Hong Kong metal / hard rock guitarist
with some classic Marshals and a few classic Fenders,
on some rebuilds and mods, he has mostly SEDs,
and MOST ALL are going bad, he is apoplectic about it too.
I have Tungsols in a few amps and like them for power tubes.
I have Electro Harmonix 6L6 in the Dumble clone power tubes
and they are stable, but I don't push it hard so far.
On the front end small 12a±7 class I love Mullards,
especially for those 1st or overdriven tubes.
But also NOS Philips, RCA, National and Sylvania.
Typically JAN Joint Army Navy old stock.
A bit less picky about Phase inverter tubes
or Tune stack drivers or reverb drivers.
Tesla had a bad batch of GZ34 recto tubes recently,
but their other tubes seem to be fine.
Generally a good marque.
Tubes last a good long while, don't go cheap,
just put in good ones gradually. _________________ DLD, Chili farmer. Plus bananas and papaya too.

David - Just FWIW, I've had really good success with SED Winged C's in a couple of amps here (tone, stability, etc). On balance, they also have very good 'press' among alot of the chatter on other guitar forums. Just my experience.... _________________ "...An admission of interest in protracted commentary is certainly no reason to capitalize on surmised aberations that do not exist." - BH |

I have also had very good experience with the SED Winged C tubes. Good life and tone out of the 6L6's and EL34's. _________________ Michael Brebes

I have also heard nice things about the tone
and stability
of some generation of Winged C.
But my more or less student amp mod'er is losing these tubes
at a maddening rate. Most cases prior to doing any work
on the amp.
He is 6 for 8 bad at this point. Prretty maddening.
This is part of 8 amps worth of advising I am doing with Wei right now. So I agreed with the warning,
based on actually dealing with a high percentage of
bad ones in present tense.
Bad batch of a normally good tube is my best guess. _________________ DLD, Chili farmer. Plus bananas and papaya too.
