I've had a night or two when I deserved to be stabbed. I like to think that I've graduated and am now a purveyor of quality musical product, but, I guess I just won't know for sure until I expire from natural cause and evade the critics' knife forever.

I only played steel in clubs for about 10-months, on weekends. At the 12 o'clock club in downtown Chattanooga, I believe we closed at 4 am, one morning the drummer's father (a sometimes singer), slugged his then drunken wife a couple of times, and as she rolled around on the darkened parking lot crying, and people watched, being drunk he got into his car and left, I stood in front of his prone wife to keep him from (accidentally) running over her. Another morning, (I always removed the back legs of the steel, and put it in the trunk assembled on a sleeping bag). As the band stood outside, and I was getting ready to put the guitar into the trunk, one of the club owner's drunken friends pulled a gun and said he thought he should shoot the guitar. We all ignored him, and I looked around for a patroling police car that usually patrolled the parking lot. Of course there wasn't any around, and after we ignored the drunk for several minutes, I put the guitar into the trunk, and everyone went home. And, one of customers, a nice guy who always brought his wife in and they danced, was a bouncer at another club that closed earlier. One night we were informed he had been shot and killed while on his job. Sometimes it's tough out there....
