Kay breaks with tradition and uses his pedal steel on this Patsy Cline hit!

I found threats in my mailbox of being taken to burn at the stake! Just kidding!

Truth be told, I did start with the lap steel (C6th, A6th, B11th) but, my limitations, could not get the sound I thought this lovely tune merited....and the pedal steel seemed to give me the sound I had been carrying in my head for days. If anyone plays, knows or has a lap steel version, would be pleased if they could share it...

"Sweet Dreams" was written by Dob Gibson in 1963 and waited many years until Patsy Cline sang it and took it to fame before her untimely passing on. A movie of the same name was made a few years ago illustrating her tragic and short life. Many others have "covered" this beautiful tune, including Reba McEntire and Emmylou Harris. Of the instrumental versions, my favourites are the versions of Pig Harris, Chet Atkins with Mark Knopfler, and then Roy Buchanan did a very moving and beautiful "bluesy" warm fuzz version.

I took inspiration for this version of the tune from ace steel guitarist and good friend Chuck Lettes' recent posting. Here played on MSA Classic pedal steel, E9th tuning, in the key of G. The tune has some smooth " in situ" chord inversions and changes. I had a little help from my son, David (vibes and accordion on sampled keyboard).

There's the Jerry Byrd recording, where he combines it with "I Fall to Pieces."

It's on the "By Request" CD.
